Govt to build 2000 new primary and secondary schools

Zimbabwe's government is building 200 new primary and secondary schools as it hopes to improve access to education in the country.

The Herald reports that the country's Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Lazarus Dokora, told parents and pupils during the official handover of computers at Mukomberanwa Secondary School, Chirumhanzu, that building will soon start.

Dokora revealed that there is a deficit of 2 056 schools which the government plans to address.

"In 2013, we identified 2 056 places where we want to build schools," he said.

"Most of these schools will be built in resettlement areas."

He said the government seeks partnership on the project.

"At the moment we are looking for investor partners to construct these schools.

"As a ministry, we have been given a task by Cabinet to build about 100 schools before the end of this year."

Student Pulse gathered that the construction is in line with the Zim-Asset economic turnaround programme under the country’s Social Services and Poverty Eradication Cluster, aimed at increasing access to education.
