Borno to re-open public secondary schools on Nov. 16

The Borno Government on Wednesday said that it would re-open public secondary schools in the state on Nov. 16.

Mallam Inuwa Kubo, the state Commissioner for Education, disclosed this at a meeting with Principals of secondary schools in Maiduguri.

Kubo, however, said that only schools located in secured areas with adequate security would be re-opened.

He lamented that Boko Haram insurgency had seriously affected the education sector in the state and commiserated with principals and teachers who lost their relatives and staff to the insurgency.

He urged them to see the lost as a gallant fight in the quest to save the education system from collapse, assuring that the state government would provide qualitative education in spite of the lingering security challenges.

Kubo said that day students would be served with breakfast and launch in schools as part of government effort to encourage parents to enroll their children in schools.

He called on the principals to take stock of vandalised structures and furniture in their respective schools and forward same for further action.

He also directed the principals to prepare lists of teachers, students and others killed by the insurgents for onward submission to the Federal Government Support Fund for Insurgency Victims for possible assistance.

in his speech, Alhaji Ababa Yari, Director of Schools, called on the principals to complement government effort by ensuring quality education in their schools.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that public schools were closed on March 14, 2014, after deadly attacks by the insurgents on schools in the state.

Although public primary schools were re-opened in November, 2014, secondary schools had remained closed.
