The academic pace of the students was fraught with accreditation issues which prompted the former Minister of Education, Prof Ruqayyatu Rufa'i to recommend the dissolution of science courses in UNIABUJA.

In 2012, the Minister announced that medicine, agriculture, veterinary medicine and engineering courses in the university be suspended following panel recommendations.

This announcement led to agitations from the students asking the government to transfer them to another school.

Fortunately for the students, the panel's report was not implemented and that saved their academic pursuit from being disrupted midway. But then, the university still had to ensure the courses are accredited to authenticate the certificate of its graduates.

The University secured the accreditation and 18 out of the 30 pioneer student finally graduated in November 2017. The remaining 12 failed their final exam and would have to wait till next year for their graduation.

Ekiti State University (EKSU) is battling with the same accreditation problem as the medical students of the University's College of Medicine remain stagnant in their academic pursuit in the school.

Expressing their frustration, in October,  the students flooded Twitter Nigeria with #stagnanteksumed to announce their plights and beg the government of Ekiti State to find a solution to the accreditation problem inhibiting their graduation.

The students lamented that the Ekiti State University College of Medicine has been stagnant for years saying they have spent eight years and they are still in 400 levels.

Ekiti State University started operation in 2009,  the pioneer students of the College of Medicine are still in 400 Level according to the students and their course of study has still not been accredited.

When will EKSU produce medical graduates?

How many years more will it take for the university to get it College of Medicine accredited? How many more years will it take the students who have been stuck in 400 level for years to graduate?

These are the questions neither the university management nor the students can answer but UNIABUJA has set 12 years infamous standard for schools that start a program without accreditation.

Will EKSU medical students spend more than 12 years to study medicine? Only time can tell.
