Students all over South Africa have been protesting, together, since last week after the management of universities unveiled plans to increase tuition fees by up to 10% to 12%.
What started as a one-university action at the prestigious Johannesburg's University of Witwatersrand soon became a national fight, spreading to the University of Cape Town, Rhodes University, Stellenbosch University, Fort Hare University, University of the Free State, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, and the University of Pretoria.
The protesting students have rejected an increase capped at 6%, fought armed police, endured grenades and brutal combat with officers, invaded the Parliament, breached the headquarters of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) and generally remained focused.
In the course of the struggle, the Higher Education Minister, Blade Nzimande, drew their ire for not taking them serious and they now want his head as an addition to the ‘no-increase’ demonstration that is reminiscent of the anti-apartheid protests of the minority rule era.
