Angry students urge end to Obafunwa's 'reckless' election recess

Students of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, have called on Governor Babatunde Fashola to reopen the institution and end the 'election recess' imposed on them since March.

In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU), Mr. Adebanjo Fatai, urged Fashola to reopen the institution after one month and six days of staying idle at home, Vanguard reports.

“The love of LASUites is never in the heart of the Management as we can deduce that the management and the state government are not ready to reopen the school," Fatai said.

Embattled Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. John Obafunwa, who is in a running battle with workers' unions, had in March called asked students and staff to vacate the institution from March 25th, 2015, without stating a date for resumption.

The impromptu break was called an “election recess” for the 2015 general elections which began on Saturday March 28 and has since ended.

Weeks after the conclusion of the election, the institution has yet to announce a resumption date and the students are not happy that neither the state government nor the management is willing to reopen the school.

Fatai also criticised a recent publication by the management on the institution's website which stated that the “Declared recess is still very much in force.”

"The students’ Union of LASU respectfully assert that the online bulletin released by LASU Management shows how irrational and reckless the Management is towards the reopening of LASU," he said.

It will be recalled that the chairman of the local chapter of the chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr. Adekunle Idris last week called for the resumption of activities while insisting that the insisted that the vote of no confidence passed Obafunwa remains.
