Abiola Orimolade, founder of the NSFDW, told Student Pulse his love for promoting creativity spurred him on.
NSFDW Was Born To Encourage Entrepreneurship – Founder
The Nigeria Student Fashion And Design Week (NSFDW) was born out of the desire to encourage talented youths, explore their creativity and become entrepreneurs.
"I appreciate creativity and love to help people around me develop their talent so we started NFSDW to encourage self development and entrepreneurship among the youth," he says.
Orimolade said people have to drop the notion that fashion designing, or tailoring, as the profession is popularly called, is for poor people.
"Fashion is a professional art. Unfortunately, many still denigrate people in the fashion industry," he said.
"The fashion world is very profitable and I would encourage anybody to go in, if they have the interest and creativity required."
He also urged Nigerians to patronise products by Nigerian designers because their product could measure up to any around the world.
"Most people don't order clothes from abroad anymore because the young Nigerian designers are making it for them," he said.
Orimolade's dreams of promoting entrepreneurship have already begun to yield fruits.
The Best designer from the last edition Ayotunde Okubanjo was given a slot to showcase at Africa Fashion Week London last year and she will be showcasing at Africa Fashion Week Nigeria this May.
Season 2 of the Nigerian Student Fashion and Design Week scheduled for June 5th, 6th at the University of Lagos, with over 48 student/aspiring designers as well as over 30 exhibitors expected at the event.
