Retired school teachers cry out over 27 month unpaid pensions

An individual must pay up to N300,000 in bribe to secure a job placement as a school principal in Enugu, despite the state government's free education policy.

Retired primary school teachers in Enugu state have protested the government's failure to pay their pensions for about 27 months.

The pensioners, led by their chairman, Matthias Onovo, and the secretary, Ben Nwachi, made their grievances known when they paid a courtesy call on the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Edward Ubosi.

According to them, some of them have not been paid their gratuities since they retired in 20012.

Blaming the immediate past governor of the state, Sullivan Chime, for the backlog, the retired teachers said they had written to the authorities concerned over their plight without a positive outcome.

According to them, the Chime's administration ignored them, leaving them with no option than to seek the Speaker's assistance.

Responding, Ubosi assured the teachers that their issue would be resolved.

"Your labour will never go in vain," he said.

"You have laboured and you deserve to be paid."

He told them that the new governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has already set up a committee to look into issues relating to teachers and pensioners.
