China witnessed its first self-immolation in 5 months last week after a 22-year-old student burned himself to death in protest
A Tibetan student, Lhamo Tashi, burned himself to death last week in the western province of Gansu to protest continued Chinese rule.
In what is reported to be the first self-immolation in five months, Tashi set himself on fire in front of a police station last Wednesday, New York Times reports.
The twenty-two-year-old shouted slogans before dying of his injuries.
Student Pulse gathered that the police seized his body and cremated it despite contrary request from the family.
The family was reportedly given his ashes two days later.
No fewer than 132 Tibetans have self-immolated to protest Chinese rule over Tibetan territories since 2009.
