Pay our members, don’t divert funds, ASUP warns governors
Governors who owe workers’ salaries have been advised by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) to use the Federal Government financial bailout for the intended purpose only.
The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) gave the warning in a Tuesday press statement signed by ASUP National Publicity Secretary, Clement Chairman.
ASUP urged the governors against using the bailout funds approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for capital projects or other political purposes.
Citing the cases of Plateau, Benue, Osun and Oyo among others, where Polytechnic staff are owed up to ten months salaries, leading to the shutdown of some of the institutions, ASUP said Nigeria’s quest for educational development and the future of her youths is threatened.
"Settle all outstanding salaries and allowances owed its members in order to avert constant disruption of academic activities in the sector,” the statement read in part.
The union commended Buhari for coming to the rescue of the states.
It also urged for a close monitoring of the disbursement of the funds for accountability.
