The Nigerian government must intensify efforts towards the rescue of the abducted Chibok girls, stakeholders in the education sector have said.
Chibok girls must have been 'assaulted beyond proportion' — NUT boss
NUT National President, Comrade Michael Olukoya, has urged the government to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted Chibok girls who he says must be been 'assaulted' by their captors.
Hundreds of girls were abducted by members of the Boko Haram sect from their school in Adamawa state on the 14 April 2014 and have since remained in captivity.
In a telephone interview with Daily Independent, the National President of the Nigeria Union Teachers (NUT), Comrade Michael Olukoya, said the young girls must have been 'assaulted' by their captors.
“It is not an easy thing for adolescent girls under captivity over one year, sincerely they would have been assaulted beyond proportion, and for me I pray we get these girls back alive," Olukoya said.
He noted that the girls' abduction has affected the nation's education sector and must be addressed urgently.
"The abduction of the girls has caused a devastating effect on the nation’s education system because any time our mind reflects back at the plight of these girls one wonders about the future of this country."
The one year anniversary of the girls' abduction was marked on Tuesday April 14, 2015.
