President Goodluck Jonathan has said his administration is targeting a top-500 spot in world rankings for Nigerian universities.

Jonathan said this while receiving  a delegation of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

‎We want our universities to be among the top rated in the world.

"Is not easy to be at top, there is no reason why Nigerian universities cannot be among the top 500 in the world," Jonathan said.

"But we must work hard…as a leading black nation in the world,we must get there, that’s the only way we can reshape, rebuild our nation that our children will be proud of.”

He commended NAN for its role.

Interestingly, according to Webometrics.info, the highest ranked Nigerian University, Obafemi Awolowo University, is 19th in African rankings and a dismal 1655th position in the world.

It then means that Nigerian universities would need to surpass 1,155 institutions to claim the 50th position, a feat which seems impossible with the endless problems in the education sector.

The NANS delegation, led by Senior Special Assistant on Youth Affairs, Jude Imagwe and NANS President, Yinka Gbadebo, decorated Jonathan as the Grand Commander of Nigerian Students (GCNS).
