ASUP threatens strike

The (ASUP) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike action if the federal government refuses to give in to its demands.

President of ASUP, Comrade Usman Yusuf Dutse while speaking to journalists in Lafia, Nasarawa, said they want the government to seek solution to inadequate infrastructure in polytechnics across the country and inadequate funding, while also reiterating their stand that there is need for the review of Polytechnics Acts which are outdated.

The ASUP chairman also asked the government to address and tackle the issue of university/polytechnic dichotomy, saying bachelors degree and Higher National Degree (HND) holders should be treated equally in terms of promotion and considerations for appointments in the civil service.

He further stated that the newly introduced Treasury Single Account (TSA) by the government should not include tertiary institutions due to their peculiar nature, hence the need for them to be exempted.

“We cannot efficiently operate with the TSA platform because it is cumbersome, so it is not good for tertiary institutions” he said.
