ABU students launch campaign against fake news

The students warn that fake news on social media could lead to the destruction of life and properties.

The students under the umbrella of the National Association of Social Science Students (NASS) launched a campaign against fake news in their university.

The campaign was launched with a public lecture, which was chaired by the ex-governor of Kaduna State, Ramalan Yero.

Speaking on the theme of the campaign, “Social Media, Fake News and National Unity,” the president of the students association, Maitala Ilyas Khalifa said the purpose of the campaign was to fight fake news among Nigerian youths.

He said, “This campaign is against the creation and the spread of fake news among Nigerians, especially Youths and students who are more prone to the hazards on the social media

“Fake news gives rooms for unethical journalism and sensationalism that could lead to the destruction of life and properties as we are living witness to its havoc elsewhere across the globe.”

Students urged to use social media positively

There have been calls on students to make use of the social media positively.

In April 2018, the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, Prof Yahuza Bello, has advised Nigerian students to promote folklores on social media.

Bello gave the advice at the 4th Annual Congress and 13th Nigerian Folklore Society Conference on Monday in Kano.

According to him, the social media folklores should be aimed at inculcating moral discipline and uplifting the cultural heritage of Nigerian people all over the world.

Bello said there was an urgent need for students to adhere to the ethics of writing in any Nigerian Language, especially on folklores.
