Education stakeholders have called for a framework to end cohabitation among students at a summit organized by the Students’ Affairs Division of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akoko-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State.

Speakers at the summit, tagged: 'Cohabitation among students', all called for immediate action towards ending the popular trend.

In his speech, AAUA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun, said immoral acts among students have eroded the Nigeria's cultural values.

He argued that cohabitation was a sin and called on education stakeholders to find a means of ending the vice which many students indulge in.

"Findings by researchers have proved that cohabitation among unmarried students has been on the rise in recent times and if deliberate steps are not taken by education stakeholders, including managements of tertiary institutions, parents and religious leaders, this anomaly would continue to be on the rise and the society will ultimately suffer for it," Ajibefun said.

AAUA’s Director of Women Studies and Development Centre (WSDC),  Dr Nireti Duyilemi, delivered a lecture titled: Campus co-habitation: A negative attitudinal disposition that debases the dignity of womanhood.

He urged students to shun the act.

The Dean Students’ Affairs (DSA), Dr Bolanle Ogungbamila, said cohabitation negatively affects students’ futures.

He however explained that the vice is encouraged by identified inadequate hostels.

Cohabitation, often called campus marriage, is very common in Nigerian universities that allow male and female students to live close to each other.

AAUA is a state government owned university established in December 1999.
