We can’t afford election holidays... ebola delay still affecting schools — FG

The Federal Government has directed all schools to remain on sessions during the 2015 general elections so that schools can stabilize the academic calendar following the extended Ebola-induced break in 2015.

Schools across the country must remain in session during the general elections to save the academic calendar, says the Minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau.

The Minister said this while addressing journalists in Abuja

Shekarau said schools cannot afford to proceed on break following the disruption of the 2014 academic calendar by Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).

He argued that most schools are still trying to catch up, adding that elections have been successfully held with schools in session in the past.

"We have had elections in the past where schools were in session and in view of the fact that this is just almost half way into the second term of the school calendar and in view of the fact that we have suffered long holiday during the Ebola incident with many schools battling to catch up with the lost period, there is no reason to close the schools,” he said.

Shekarau directed all school to suspend plans to embark on mid-term break while those already on break were asked to resume academic activities.

He assured that adequate security will be provided in all schools to protect students and property.
