20 students of MAPOLY arrested for alleged arson
The Police PRO in Ogun State, affirmed that the students touched some government properties during their protests.
The protesting students took to the street of Abeokuta on Monday, December 18, disrupting vehicular movement in Pansheke area of the state capital.
The protest tagged ''black week'' reportedly turned violent as the students made a bonfire on roads and allegedly attempted to burn properties.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi affirmed that the students touched some government properties during their protests.
Also, a policeman was injured during the protest while one of the students fainted on the first day of the protest.
Meanwhile, the arrested students have been charged to court but according to Punch, the court has dismissed the murder charge slammed against them saying the suit against the suspect was not properly instituted.
But according to Punch, only five of the twenty suspects are students of MAPOLY as the police also reportedly arrested civil servants and a corp member parading all of them as MAPOLY protesting students.
The Polytechnic crises
Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY academic staff and the state government have been having issues with the upgrade of the polytechnic to a University, while MAPOLY would be moved to another site in Ipokia.
Following the face-off between the staff and the government, the latter cried out in November alleging threat to their lives and then declared an industrial action.
