1 killed, 8 vehicles, school clinic burnt as students protest

The students protested against the management because of the delay in the issuance of their identity cards for exams.

The violent protest reportedly claimed the life of a student and school properties worth millions of Naira also destroyed.

The students, who reportedly went on a rampage during the protest set some school buildings and several vehicles belonging to staff on fire before the arrival of security operatives.

The deceased student was alleged to have been hit with a stay bullet in the midst of the commotion of their protest and the security operatives effort to stop the protest.

According to Premium Times, the protest which turned violent was staged by the students to challenge the delay in the issuance of their school identity cards, which they claimed they had paid for.

Management staff run for their lives

Reacting to the protest, the spokesperson of the institution, Elizabeth Aboreng, said the school staff had to run for their lives as the internal security of the college could not contain the situation.

Aboreng said, “we ran for our lives, the students were violent,” she said.

“The institution’s internal security could not contain the situation, they (students) burnt down our school clinic with two ambulances. They also destroyed and set ablaze six other cars belonging to staff."

“We had to invite security agencies, but they had already caused the havoc. The shutting of the institution is indefinite till further notice,”

Recall that Benue State University decision to disallow those who have not paid school fees from writing examinations.

The students shut the school gates and the management was forced to post the exam scheduled to start on Monday, February 19. The university has been shut down indefinitely
