Jose S. Landaverde who recently retired as a priest allegedly beat up a woman near his house after a night out drinking.

A recently retired priest, Jose S. Landaverde, has been arrested for beating up a woman after a night out drinking in the United States.

Police were on Monday, December 8, called to a report of a battery at 2900 block of West 25th Street at about 3.am where they met a 34-year-old woman who reported that she has been assaulted by the retired priest. The woman told the officers she went back to the man's home "after a night of drinking" and they began arguing, according to police report.

Landaverde pushed her to the ground and kicked her several times, according to the report. Witnesses intervened and pulled them apart, police said. "The offender became enraged and began to place his hands about the victim’s throat as if he was about to choke her," part of the report read.

Jose S. Landaverde  who is known for his work for immigration reform was arrested at his home in the 2900 block of West 25th Street and charged with one count of misdemeanor battery after the incident early Monday, officials said.

The woman declined to be taken to a hospital, and there were no visible marks on her body, the report said.

Landaverde who was a priest at Our Lady of Guadalupe Anglican Mission, is due to be arraigned in court on the charge on Tuesday, January 20.
