Transgender plays Jesus Christ in Brazil

Despite protests from the Christian community, a judge is allowing a transgender play the role of Jesus Christ.

The highest state court in São Paulo has ruled in favor of a trans artist named Renata Carvalho to play a transgender Jesus Christ.

According to The Christian Post, the play titled “The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven” received a lot of criticism from Christians.

The protesters called the controversial play ‘a horrific spectacle’ as they wrote petitions calling for it to be banned.

“The performance of this horrific spectacle is equal to the persecution suffered by Christians in the first centuries when they were thrown to wild animals in the arenas of Rome as a form of entertainment,” one petition reportedly read.

Another injunction called the play disrespectful,” ‘’aggressive” and “in bad taste.”

Reacting to the original U.K. version in 2009, a Scottish pastor noted that things would be different if  Islamic figures were used in such a way.

“If this play had treated the prophet Muhammed, in the same way, there would have been a strong reaction from the Islamic community, but that just wouldn’t happen,” Pastor Jack Bell of Zion Baptist Church in Glasgow said.

He added:“You can’t blaspheme God and use freedom of speech as an excuse for that. True biblical Christianity is becoming marginalized through political correctness.”

Unfortunately for them, the petitions were overturned by Judge J. L. Mônaco da Silva of the São Paulo Court of Justice.

In his decision, he said: “People might not agree with the content of the show.

“But that’s not enough reason to knock on the doors of the court to ban its performance. Just don’t watch it!”

The judge added that an injunction to block the performance would be unconstitutional,  effectively “forbid artistic activity” and amount to “true cultural aggression.”

On Transgender Jesus

The play was originally written by the England-born, Scotland-based playwright Jo Clifford and adapted in Brazil by Argentinean-born director Natalio Mallo.

In it, the audience gets to see Clifford’s experience in her church in Scotland, which ostracised her after she transitioned from a man to a woman.

For the director, showing Jesus as a transwoman shows the intolerance faced by transgender people, adding that the show’s message is about “forgiveness and acceptance.”

Reacting to the protest, Clifford said: “As a practicing Christian myself, I have no interest in attacking the Church or mocking the Church or make fun of the Church or in any way being blasphemous or offensive.

“I simply want to assert very strongly, as strongly as I can, that Jesus of the Gospels would not in any way wish to attack or denigrate people like myself.”

The play is a one-woman show which features a church service,  sermon, parables, singing, and the breaking of the bread.
