Here is the ONLY way to drop your nasty habits

Colossians 3:5, "Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry."

Only God can help you quit sex obsession, drinking, smoking other nasty habits

Struggling to let go of things that you crave, constantly, is so burdensome and tough, that it is no wonder a lot of people fail 80 percent of the time.

This struggle to do the right thing, which is dropping these nasty habits, and the inability to succeed is perfectly described in Romans 7:17–20, which says, "So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me."

Thus, the question becomes 'how do I get rid of the strong desire to indulge in these bad habits?'

We can stop these by living for Christ/God.

Simply put, we live for our Father, in Heaven, by acknowledging that He made us, that He put us on earth for reasons, that do not involve smoking, lying, stealing, drinking, sex, e.tc. and that our lives belong to Him, and Him alone, not us.

The reason, most people do the things they do, is because they feel like they own their lives, bodies and can do whatever they want.

This way of thinking leads a lot of people down a terrible path in life, one filled with bad choices, mistakes, and regrets.

Proverbs 14:12 summarizes this perfectly, saying, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death."

The ONLY way we can live right is if we recognize that our lives are God's, not ours.

Acknowledging this, puts everything is a much-needed perspective, because as Pope Francis aptly put, "our life is not a video game or a soap opera; our life is serious and the goal to achieve is important: eternal salvation."

Now that we have recognized this important, but often disregarded fact of life, the next thing is to take the necessary steps to quit these bad life choices.

We do this by;

1. going to God with a contrite heart and recognizing that we are all sinners, vulnerable to these habits: Proverbs 28:13 says, "People who conceal their sins will not prosper, but if they confess and turn from them, they will receive mercy." Isaiah 64:6 goes on to say, "we are all infected and impure with sin. When we display our righteous deeds, they are nothing but filthy rags. Like autumn leaves, we wither and fall, and our sins sweep us away like the wind."

2. transforming your mind with prayers and the right material: the word of God helps to cleanse your heart, mind, and soul, which sets you on the right path. Also, you get to know what God demands of you. 1 Thessalonians 4:3–5 tells us, "for this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God." Reading the Bible and surrounding yourself with like-minded people will also help you recognize your triggers and how to avoid returning to these habits. Mark 14:38 says, "watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

3. knowing the consequences of our actions: the effects of our bad habits go beyond the physical. Smoking or drinking or having sex with random people does not only affect our bodies, it also affects our souls, and our tickets to heaven. Colossians 3: 2-6 says, "set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature:sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming." Galatians 5: 19-21 goes on to say, "the acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."

4. taking victory in God: this step is needed whenever you face temptations. You can overcome anything by taking victory in God and Him alone. 1 Corinthians 15:57 tells us, "but thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ." Luke 18:27 also says, "Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.”

The truth is that we are in a constant battle between good and evil (this includes our desires and habits) from the moment we open our eyes, daily.

Thankfully, we do not have to fight this battle alone because we have God, on our side.

Let us hold on to Him because He is the ONLY 'thing' we need to survive this thing called life!!!
