5 important taboo subjects the church should be focusing on

The church is not just for collecting offerings, tithes and preaching prosperity sermons. It is for way more than that.

Unfortunately, many are refusing to be bothered by the mess which explains why many are sticking to the overflogged prosperity sermons.

Rt. Rev Festus Davies, the Bishop of Ogori Magongo Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, is calling out these preachers.

Speaking at the 60th anniversary of St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church Aguda, Lagos, he says amongst other things that ministers should stop making prosperity the main feature of the gospel.

According to The Guardian, the Anglican Bishop is advising these preachers to preach the undiluted word of God.

In his words, “The challenges the church is facing today is that the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries stood for the undiluted word of God but the present generation of churches we have diluted the word of God to the extent that everybody is now preaching what he/she likes.

“Everybody says what suits them and not what Christ stood for. Healing and prosperity in the Bible are good but that cannot be our major emphasis. Once they get the gospel right, there is healing, deliverance, and breakthrough, but Christ first."

“So, the gospel first and all other material things will be added to you and not the other way round. How can you talk about healing when Christ has not been preached?

“Where do you get the healing from? And until we go back to the old-time religion before we can get ourselves right.

“The government don’t respect the church again it is because preachers tell politicians what they want to hear and after that money is given in exchange. It is not the true gospel that Christ died for.”

In light of this much-needed admonition, we are offering these five important areas for preachers to turn their attention to.

1. Sex: Nowadays, we have more preachers discussing sex. This is fine but we definitely more people talking about it. Ministers need to talk about pre-marital, extra-marital, infidelity, pornography and everything pertaining to sex so that church members are properly guided.

2. Domestic violence: Causes, how to prevent it and what to do if it happens.

3. Addictions: People with addictions don't need to be made to feel worse, rather we should offer them solutions and work hard ensure that others do not get involved in the first place.

4. Depression and suicide: These are two sensitive issues that the church tends to shy away from. Sadly, this means the people with these issues end up feeling even more lonely than they already are.

Studies have shown that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among children, teens, and young adults ages 10–24. So why isn't the church talking about it? The church needs to start addressing these issues.

5. Poverty:A lot of preachers prey upon poor people, they scam them into giving away their money until there is nothing left to give. We do better. Some churches have started offering training but there is room for more work to be done.

These are all important areas that the church should be focusing on. If the church does not address these issues, people will seek help elsewhere and this elsewhere will be where the devil does his best work.

Let us not forget that the church is bigger than just collecting offerings, tithes and preaching prosperity sermons.

Mark 2:17 says, “….Jesus told them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

It is a hospital for the broken, messy, wounded sinners who need to be offered God’s love, grace, mercy and everything amazing that He is about.
