According to Huffington Post, over 100 Catholics signed a full-page ad in San Francisco Chronicle asking Pope Francis to name a new church leader more closely aligned with San Francisco’s progressive ideals.
Catholic church members want Pope to change controversial Archbishop
The Archdiocese of San Francisco in a statement made available to Huffington Post, dismisses the advertisement and purported petition, saying the protesters do not speak for the true church.
One of the petitioners said: “This letter follows months of protests against the archdiocese’s leadership. Frustrated local Catholics have spoken out, in particular, against Cordileone’s efforts to add language to the moral guidelines laid out for teachers at Catholic high schools that reaffirms the church’s stances on same-sex marriage, artificial insemination and other controversial matters.”
The Archdiocese of San Francisco in a statement made available to Huffington Post, dismisses the advertisement and purported petition saying: “The advertisement is a misrepresentation of Catholic teaching, a misrepresentation of the nature of the teacher contract, and a misrepresentation of the spirit of the Archbishop. The greatest misrepresentation of all is that the signers presume to speak for “the Catholic Community of San Francisco.” They do not.”
