John Legend makes history by acting as the Son of God
The singer will be the first African American to play the role of Jesus.
The popular musician is set to change the popular portrayal of the Messiah as a blue-eyed man by becoming the first African American to play this role.
Legend will be acting in NBC’s live musical version of Jesus Christ Superstar, which is about the end of his life.
World Religion News reports that it also focuses on the betrayal of Jesus by Judas, the conflict between King Herod and Jesus Christ.
Reactions
One of the executive producers, Andrew Llyod Webber tweeted the news saying, “We are thrilled to have @johnlegend join us as Jesus for @JCSTheMusical Live! this Easter."

Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment said: “We’re all overjoyed to have world-class musical artist and producer John Legend starring as Jesus.
“This score demands a singer with an amazing range and an actor with great depth, and there isn’t anyone better to bring this story to a new audience. His casting is also ground-breaking as the traditional image of Christ will be seen in a new way.”
Legend has made a statement saying, “It’s such a powerful, meaningful musical and I’m humbled to be part of this performance. We’ve already formed an incredible team, and, as we finish casting, I’m certain we will put together some of the greatest talents around to do this work justice.”
Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert!, the original Broadway show opened in October 1971 and ran to July 1973.
There have been over 700 performances since then.
