Report claims religious leaders are responsible for many sexual molestation cases

Investigations done by the Lagos State Police Command have revealed that religious leaders are often the culprits of sexual offenses.

Research says religious leaders are major culprits in sexual molestation cases

According to the Police Command, these Men of God are the major culprits of sexual molestation cases.

This startling revelation was made by the Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, at a media conference, organized by the state's Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa.

There, she said a lot of these leaders use the religion as the perfect cover to commit their crimes.

Badmos also said that the Command, along with the Office of the Attorney General of the State and the DSVRT were doing their best to handle the situation.

The event, themed:  “Promoting Positive Masculinity, Men Can End Sexual And Gender Based Violence”, was also attended by Mr Adeniji Kazeem, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice.

Kazeem, who is also the Chairman of DSVRT, revealed details of  a research, that was carried on sex convicts and inmates in February, 2016.

“Results of the research disclosed that 80.9 percent of the inmates were abused as a child implying that they had become sexually active at an early age which illustrates the trend of ‘abused abuser’.

Furthermore, DSVRT has also scientifically discovered that a lot of attention has been on females, unconsciously neglecting males who have a major role to play in tackling and preventing SGBV,” he added.

The chairman of the event called on men to help in the fight against sexual crimes.

This event is part of the state government's one-month long awareness campaign against all forms of domestic and sexual violence crimes
