5 great reasons to memorise the Word of God

Memorising the scriptures is something every Christian should try to be good at. Here is why.

Like every other relationship, it requires work in order to grow. One great way to improve this relationship is by memorizing the scripture, according to Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church.

On his website, he said: "If you're serious about being spiritually strong and mature, the greatest habit you can develop is memorising Scripture. In fact, the Bible says in James 1:25 that it's one of four habits that lead to a blessed life."

Warren also gave two reasons for everyone to develop this important tool. They are:

1. To have God's Word with them, always: "When you're witnessing to someone who doesn't know Jesus, is under stress, needs comfort, or is in a crisis, there's usually not a Bible around. You need God's Word in your mind so you can remember it and review it right when you need it."

2. To mediate on the Scripture anytime, and anyplace: "You can think about the Bible because you've memorised it. That's called meditation. The only promise of prosperity and success that God gives us in the Bible says that meditating on his Word is the key."

Warren also urged Christians to embrace this habit so that they can stop being "spiritual babies."

Three extra reasons for memorising the scripture are:

3. For motivation, encouragement and strength: Jeremiah 15:16 says, “Your words are my joy and my heart’s delight." Having the scripture on your mind 24/7 means you are constantly filled with words of comfort, encouragement, motivation and strength in your time of need. Whenever times are tough, you do not have to look far, you just have to search inside and you are renewed.

4. To know God's plan for you: Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to guide me and a light for my path.” Having the Word of God in your heart means you know the will of God for you. This helps you stay grounded and make great decisions.

5. As defense against temptations/sin: Temptations are easier to handle with the Word of God in your heart. This was Jesus' approach when Satan tried to tempt Him in the wilderness. When faced with Satan’s deceitful words in Matthew 4:1-11, he was able to overcome with the Word of God.  Psalm 119:11 confirms this, "I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Memorizing the scripture is the only armor you need against sin/temptation.
