Christ Embassy music director arraigned for kidnapping

The nabbed armed robbery and kidnapping suspect said he is the Music Director of a Christ Embassy branch in Lagos.

A 25-year old armed robbery suspect and kidnapper, Edward Nnaji, who claims to be a Music Director at a Christ Embassy Church has been arrested by men of the Federal Anti-robbery Squad, Lagos Island.

Edward Nnaji was arrested with two members of his armed robbery gang, 23-year-old Osas Osagie, and 29-year-old Patrick Donatus Jackson. The trio alongside others kidnapped a female banker, Popoola Morenikeji, two years ago and collected the sum of N5m as ransom before they set her free.

Police say that the suspects allegedly kidnapped the victim at Amuwo Odofin area of Mile 2, Lagos close to her residence when she stepped out of her vehicle to buy something and took her to an uncompleted building in a bush at Mowe area of Ogun State. Edward Nnaji and his crew kept the victim for four days before freeing her after collecting the ransom from her family members.

The also stole her car as they kidnapped her and sold the N1.8m worth of Toyota Corolla for N250,000 to a certain David Nwangboa who is currently on the run. They also took her chains and jewelleries valued at N2m.

Edward Nnaji and his crew members were caught in August, two years after the kidnapping after they tried to obtain money from the victim again. They sent a test message to her, instructing her to send the sum of N150, 000 to their account else they will trail and eliminate her.

The Commissioner of Police Federal SARS, DCP Chris Ezike, took up the case after Popoola Morenikeji sent a petition to the Inspector general of Police. After a series of investigations, a team led by Inspector Oluwemimo Banjoko arrested the suspects in Lagos and Edo States.

The suspects according to the Police have all admitted and confessed to their crimes and later led the police to the place they kidnapped the woman and kept her for four days before she was set free.

Edward Nnaji said he was pushed by the devil to send the victim a test message after successfully kidnapping and extracting money from her family members two years ago. He added that he is director of music at the Christ Embassy Zone 1 Parish , Idimangoro, Lagos and also an actor who played a prominent role in a film titled.

After investigation the suspects were charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on a four-count charge of felony to wit and armed robbery.

Magistrate E. N. Johnson ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody pending DPP’s advice on the matter and adjourned the case till Tuesday, January 13, 2015.
