In 2018, we have been called to not just read and study the scriptures but also to commit them to our minds and hearts.

Here are seven important Bible verses every Christian needs to memorize in the new year.

1 Corinthians 10:31 says,

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.”

Ephesians 5:15–16 advises,

“Pay careful attention, then, to how you live — not as unwise people but as wise — making the most of the time, because the days are evil.”

Isaiah 43:18–19 tells us,

“Do not remember the past events, pay no attention to things of old. Look, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert.”

John 15:16–17 encourages,

“ You did not choose me, but I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. “This is what I command you: Love one another.”

Philippians 3:12–14 says,

“Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus.

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and reaching forward to what is ahead, I pursue as my goal the prize promised by God’s heavenly call in Christ Jesus.”

Psalm 71:5–6 reads,

“For you are my hope, Lord God, my confidence from my youth. I have leaned on you from birth; you took me from my mother’s womb. My praise is always about you.”

Finally, Joshua 1:8–9 adds,

“This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to meditate on it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do. Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Why we need to memorize Bible verses in 2018

There are so many reasons to make the memorization of God’s words compulsory.

Dallas Willard, professor of Philosophy at the University of Southern California, wrote, “Bible memorization is absolutely fundamental to spiritual formation.

“If I had to choose between all the disciplines of the spiritual life, I would choose Bible memorization, because it is a fundamental way of filling our minds with what it needs. This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth. That’s where you need it! How does it get in your mouth? Memorization” (“Spiritual Formation in Christ for the Whole Life and Whole Person” in Vocatio, Vol. 12, no. 2, Spring, 2001, p. 7).

Chuck Swindoll also said, “I know of no other single practice in the Christian life more rewarding, practically speaking than memorizing Scripture. . . . No other single exercise pays greater spiritual dividends! Your prayer life will be strengthened.

“Your witnessing will be sharper and much more effective. Your attitudes and outlook will begin to change. Your mind will become alert and observant. Your confidence and assurance will be enhanced. Your faith will be solidified” (Growing Strong in the Seasons of Life [Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 1994], p. 61).

The Bible itself offers so many reasons why this is such a great thing for Christians.

Colossians 3:16 tells us to “let the word of Christ dwell in us richly.” Deuteronomy 6:6–9 goes on to add, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children.

“Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

Let's ensure that we add memorizing scriptures to our resolutions for 2018.
