"Ycee what's really good?"

This is an exclusive blog post by Duru Enyinna. "Vector did it on King Kong and yes Nigga Raw did it first but there was room for improvement for the type of music, still is..."

Ycee

I was chilling at Satellite Town some time ago, I dey inside my paddi Tega ride and I saw two promo CDs, me being a different type of music enthusiast I had to take a look. They were promo CDs of two different artistes, Henry knight and Ycee. Henry knight is a friend to Tega and was actually around at the moment so his song was being played the whole time (was quite decent). Not like I wasn’t given the chance to listen to Ycee’s song, I just wasn’t in the mood to listen to another upcoming artiste from this part of the world because there are thousands of new, forced and whack music from them every day and I don’t think the human brain was designed to deal with such.

Time passed, and on a very random day I was watching Hip TV and this video of some dude featuring Patoranking came on and I’m like “Who be this guy?” He did really well on the song, his flow was on point and I was just like “hmm I hope say this guy go stick around”, and I didn’t even take note of his name.

Of late, my guys that stay at Festac kept talking about how some Ycee guy don finally blow say baba God don do am for am and I still didn’t pay so much attention until "Jagaban" came on one day. Really fresh good raps with energy, and a very good delivery on a gyration instrumental. It didn’t really freak me out because I and my Guy, Danas, don reason this concept since of fusing gyration with dope urban style and rap four years ago and put out songs like Good life and Melody, but it amazed me that Ycee did it perfectly. Vector did it on "King Kong" and yes Nigga Raw did it first but there was room for improvement for the type of music, still is.

Upcoming Nigerian rappers (and some already in the game) think rap is all about punch lines so they force it to have as many as possible and get really shitty punch lines that end up as jokes on social media, but Ycee is definitely not one of them. I can’t really judge right now, but I think this dude really understands the idea of rap music. En sabi how to put words together and make them rhyme nicely, doing so the punch lines come as well.

I actually think Ycee is one of the good ones, or should I say EN HEAD DEY THERE. He can be one of the Nigerian rap life supports and also give hope to the younger generation that loves this art. I know you obviously have your plans and schemes for your forthcoming singles but I think you should tap into this gyration style a little more; it could actually be it for you. Everybody can relate to a gyration beat, it’s our root, its traditional music so fusing it with those fresh bars and sending your message across at the same time will be a win win something.

Your verse on Eva’s "Debe" was really really good but I no too feel your hotline bling cover sha, I was expecting you to rap more or maybe switch up drake’s lyrics while singing but it was good, was okay. And I hope and pray you excel in the industry with whatever decision you make and I really hope you make the right decisions. I am officially a fan of that Omo Alahaji.

NB: These articles are not to defame anybody, na just church mind sturvs and I might be wrong, what do I know? But if you don’t like them you could go watch #FactsOnly with Osagie Alonge or read something from Charles Novia. For your insults or feedback, @SonofSteph on twitter.
