You can track Starboy’s entire Sony career via his numerous project leaks

Since Wizkid signed up to Sony Music, he has been leaking from every pore of his artistry. Here’s how.

Wizkid

Since Wizkid signed up to Sony Music Entertainment, his entire security can be described as a basket trying to contain water. It doesn’t leak or drip. It pours.

Over the weekend a new Wizkid material found its way to the internet. unofficially of course. This time it’s another version of visuals for the single ‘Come Closer’. This new video shows Wizkid looking dapper in different African print attires, having fun, dancing with pretty women, and looking like an African prince.

Of course Wizkid has not acknowledged its existence. Neither has Sony sent in their typical DCMA emails requesting everybody on the internet to take it down. No one is doing anything about it, which is good for the fans. They have another visual for a great song. How can that be a bad thing?

But with this latest ‘leak’, a trend is established. Since Wizkid signed up to Sony Music, he has been leaking from every pore of his artistry. Here’s how.

Announcement of Sony Deal

Wizkid never got an official announcement of his deal with Sony Music Entertainment. It was leaked. Just like Davido, Sony Music Entertainment had reached out to Wizkid as far back as 2015, but it wasn’t until 2016 that he signed a big-money deal with the music giants.

When the deal was signed and work began, no one gave an official word. Instead the story leaked out from multiple anonymous sources. Due to a lack of a clear narrative, facts mixed in with fiction to create some of the most outrageous stories ever. But the bottomline gist was Wizkid and Sony Music being in bed.

It wasn’t until early 2017 when he inked a deal with RCA Records, a Sony Music Entertainment subsidiary, which would handle all projects in the US did we all get an official announcement.

After the exploits of Wizkid on Drake’s ‘Come closer’, everyone was expecting more. Drake and Wizkid had worked twice, and on both songs, they had achieved great success first with ‘Ojuelegba’ remix, and ‘One Dance’. The latter became the most streamed song ever, gave Wizkid a Grammy nomination, scored him Billboard awards, and many more.

But the next single didn’t come out officially, it was leaked. ‘Come closer’ which featured Drake was uploaded on to the internet unofficially, and it quickly spread like fire across the web. The song received numerous cosigns, including a video of football stars Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard dancing to it in their team dressing room.

Sony Music swung into action, and scrubbed the internet for it. But the reaction to the single meant that Wizkid would later receive permission and label support to drop the single.

African Bad Gyal ft Chris Brown

Wizkid’s next single with a US star became ‘African Bad Gyal’ which featured R&B general Chris Brown. The duo had recorded as far back as 2014, but clearances and the lack of a right structure had held back the song. But that didn’t hinder the duo to perform the track live on numerous stages.

And just before its release in June, a leaked version spread like wildfire across the internet. But it went far before the original showed up, sounding like something crafted for the summer.

The most recent leaks has Wizkid appearing in a visual for ‘Come closer’ that was not released officially. Wizkid shows up in a cool African print outfits, where he dances, frolics with beautiful women, and hosts a really artistic party. It was everything the original version was not, and it also included Davido’s ex-girlfriend, Sira Kante.

These leaks have a purpose. They provide fans with a preview to his projects, but they also take away the shock value of these releases, which would have translated to more music sales. Wizkid is working on releasing a new project as soon as July 14, 2017 – “Sounds From The Other Side.”

Let’s hope it doesn’t find its way to the internet unofficially…
