Lottery Commission disapproves of underage gaming through campaign

Since the beginning of the 21st century, underage gaming has experienced a kind of renaissance.

Studies show that early participation in games, including gambling, lottery games, increases the risk of developing problematic gaming habits later in life.

The Director General of the National Lottery Regulatory Commission, Mr Lanre Gbajabiamila, stated that the ongoing campaign would continue indefinitely after expressing grave concerns about the rise of underage gaming in Nigeria.

A growing number of gaming companies and organizations concerned with underage gaming issues in Nigeria have been involved in this campaign to educate adults about these games' risks to children. Adults are encouraged to find other gift ideas for children, especially during holidays.

The change in focus of the campaign allows gaming companies and participating organizations worldwide to carry the responsible gaming message beyond the holiday season: for example, on birthdays, graduation ceremonies etc.

Mr Lanre Gbajabiamila implied that by encouraging gaming companies to give gaming tickets only to adults, the campaign gave way to responsible gaming.

The campaign raises awareness among the general public about the risks associated with underage gaming, which are the games of chance and gambling with the highest participation rate.

He explains why gambling game is not an appropriate gift for children. Gaming companies who sell it and adults who buy it should be aware that early exposure to this type of gambling game increases the risk of developing a gambling addiction.
