The agency has awarded a grant of an undisclosed amount to the Nigerian manufacturing conglomerate, Dangote Industries Limited, for the conduction of a feasibility study on the business and economic viability of the project.

Lida Fitts, USTDA’s Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa, noted that USTDA’s grant will help fund a feasibility study conducted on a competitive basis that will assess the viability of Nigeria’s transmission grid to integrate solar power from the utility-scale plant.

“This grid study will create opportunities for US industry to supply products and services that will advance Nigeria’s power goals.”

The Chairman of Dangote Industries, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, also noted that “…this grid study is a key component to the success of future grid-connected power in Kano State.”

This project is a partnership project between the Dangote Industries Limited and Black Rhion, an African-focus Infrastructure financing firm.

Securing financial aid from economic partners, such as the USTDA, is a new priority for Nigeria's renewable energy industry.

It would be recalled that the Nigeria’s Ministry of Power, Works and Housing recently announced its intention to harvest alternatives power sources in Nigeria, install 13GW from off-grid solar power, to address worsen power situation in the country.
