The death toll of the coronavirus in New York continues to climb.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Tuesday that New York recorded 731 deaths related to coronavirus since Monday, the biggest single-day toll since the virus first entered the state on March 1.

"Behind every one of those numbers is an individual, is a family, is a mother, is a father, is a brother, is a sister," Cuomo said, in his daily updates from Albany. "So, a lot of pain again today."

Here are the other biggest takeaways from Cuomo's daily update:

New York accounts for roughly half of all the coronavirus deaths in the US, with 5,489 since the outbreak began.
There are 138,836 confirmed cases statewide, up from 130,689 on Monday. New York City accounts for 76,876 cases.
Intensive care admissions are slowing despite the deaths surging, which Cuomo attributed to a lag time between hospitalizations and death, since people are often ill for weeks.
There are 4,593 patients in intensive care in the state, a jump of 89 since Monday. For context, there were 395 patients admitted to the ICU on Friday.
The rate of hospital admissions is slowing as well an increase of 4 percent since Monday which the New York Times notes is the fourth straight day that rate had grown less than 7 percent since growing 20 percent day-over-day for weeks.
Cuomo added that there is a racial dimension to the virus' toll, which he said "kills vulnerable people."
State health officials said they'll have a breakdown of the racial disparities in hospital admissions and deaths sometime this week.
Cuomo reiterated the need to practice social distancing to "flatten the curve."
"To the extent that we see a flattening or a possible plateau, that's because of what we are doing and we have to keep doing it," he said.
Cuomo said he will sign an executive order on Tuesday that levies a $1,000 fine for breaking social distancing rules. It's not yet clear how this would be enforced.
