"The people who typically get promoted keep their cool under stress," Nicole Munoz of Start Ranking Now told The Muse. "When an issue arises, they want to solve it and work to avoid future problems by learning from their mistakes."

Take the initiative

A promotion means more responsibilities which means your employer has to be sure that you are extremely capable of this new position. This is why it's important that you show him/her that you can be trusted to deliver. You do this by being proactive.

Figure out what needs to be done and do it properly. Be on the lookout for both major and minor projects you can successfully handle as they serve as great opportunities for you to display your skills.

According to James Caan, CEO of Hamilton Bradshaw, this will be highly appreciated by the company.

In a LinkedIn post, he noted, "Every manager is impressed by self-starters, and somebody who takes the initiative in areas where the business may be weak is putting themselves high up the list for a promotion."

Show your commitment to the company

In the words of Alfredo Atanacio, the Co-Founder of UassistME, a virtual assistance company: "When people are really committed, you can tell by the quality of their work, the effort they put in, and the relationships they develop."

Put in the work

There is no point in doing all of the above if you are failing at your current position. So make sure you put in the work necessary to excel at your job.

Speaking with The Muse, Co-Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Kyle Wong of Pixlee said: "Organizations place a premium on individuals who follow through on tasks. If you can prove that you can consistently own projects from start to finish, you will not only get promoted, but you'll also make yourself indispensable."

Be punctual, meet your job requirements, go extra if you can, just make sure you are doing exceptionally well.

Now, tell your boss you want that promotion

Sometimes, you just have to take the bull by the horns and go after what you want. So, put in the work, follow the rules and make sure you let your boss now you want a promotion.

This is highly recommended by the former CEO of SilencerCo, Joshua Waldron. "It seems quite simple, but expressing your desire for a particular promotion is very helpful. Sometimes management may not know you want it, or has not thought of you as a candidate, especially if it’s outside of your current department," he told TheMuse.

"Often management will tell you what you need to do to get the position if they know you want it. Be humble, inquisitive, passionate, and hungry," he concluded.
