Nigeria's oil company chief awarded Africa's oil and gas man of the year by Forbes

The award is to celebrate Dr Maikanti Baru for his role in development of oil and gas sector in Africa.

The award was given by Forbes to top oil and gas personalities who they believe have made a lot of positive contributions to the development of the oil and gas sector. Also part of the criteria is that the person should have helped facilitate stability of the economy in which they function in.

Baru was notified of his nomination for the award by a letter dated October 11, 2017, and signed by Mark Furlong who is the current president of Customs Solutions Media, on behalf of Forbes Media.

"For these and other landmark achievements which you have recorded throughout your enviable career, your nomination for this prestigious Forbes 2017 Award has been approved by Forbes Custom's Award Committee. This Award will be conferred on you by Forbes Mark Furlong", it stated.

The award ceremony would be graced by members of the international oil and gas business community, policy makers, entrepreneurs, politicians, opinion leaders, among others.

Dr. Maikanti Baru is the current Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

He has been a chief executive of the Corporation for 18 months and during this duration, he has received many awards further cementing his integral role as a leader who is doing a good job.

He attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in Kaduna State where he obtained a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Mechanical with a first class honors and later earned Ph.D. in Mechanical engineering.

Before his appointment he had worked in both the Upstream and Downstream Sectors of NNPC including Group General Manager of Greenfield Refinery Projects, Managing Director of Hyson, Executive Director of Nigerian Gas Company (NGC), General Manager – Gas Division of NAPIMS, Manager of Engineering for National Engineering and Technical Company Limited (NETCO).

He was also the NNPC’s Chief Technical Negotiator on the West African Gas Pipeline project from July 1999 to April 2004 and been the Chairman of NNPC Anti – Corruption Committee since September 2004 to date.

Dr. Baru is a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and a recipient of the Presidential Merit Award of the Nigerian Society of Chemical Engineers.

In arriving at the choice of Baru, Forbes noted that it had followed with keen interest the rising profile and impressive career path of the NNPC GMD through the years.
