Nigeria's state oil firm begins nationwide audit of trucks after gory Lagos explosion

NNPC has embarked on the nationwide audit of its field operation to ensure all delisted trucks are in compliance with the requirement to remove the company’s logo and other brand attributes.

The downstream subsidiary of Nigeria's state oil firm, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Retail Limited has embarked on the nationwide audit of its field operation to ensure all delisted trucks are in compliance with the requirement to remove the company’s logo and other brand attributes.

The NNPC retail limited is responsible for the supply and distribution of petroleum products across the country.

This development is coming a week after the unfortunate recent fuel tanker inferno on the Otedola Bridge resulting in the loss of lives and vehicles.

Ndu Ughamadu, the Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of the Corporation, said in a statement issued on Thursday, July 5, 2018, that the move has become imperative to ensure that only authentic NNPC Retail tested and certified trucks bear the company’s logo and brand insignia.

He said as market leader in the downstream retail business, the audit would help instil lasting sanity in the petroleum products haulage space across the country.

NNPC dismissed leaky fuel truck on Lagos road

The Corporation dismissed a social media trending video showing a leaky fuel truck bearing an NNPC Retail like the insignia, speeding-off along a nondescript highway in Lagos few days after the Otedola tanker explosion.

Ughamadu noted that there was nothing concrete in the clip to show that the truck in question belongs to the NNPC Retail fleet.

“Unfortunately, our in-house investigation has been constrained by the lack of a plate number on the said truck and other identification marks we normally stencil on all authentic NNPC Retail trucks across the country’’, the Corporation said.

The Corporation implored the public to quickly note the plate number of such errant vehicle or driver and report same to the company through the aforementioned phone numbers or report such acts to the nearest relevant law enforcement agency.

Since the last Lagos tanker explosion, more than two other cases of related tanker trucks spilling fuel on various roads in the country have emerged.

Nigerian lawmakers call for probe

Nigerian lawmaker on Wednesday, July 4, 2018, called on the Nigeria Police Force and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion of a tanker-laden with premium motor spirit (petrol) that claimed 16 lives in Lagos last week.

The Senate also asked the FRSC and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to seek an amendment to the extant laws needed to prevent accidents involving articulated vehicles.
