As millions of African voters head to the polls in the next 12 months, here are the elections to watch for
Some leaders who have been hoping to rule forever were unseated in Zimbabwe, Angola, and the Gambia.
Their departure was met with internal and external pressures which almost always feature in an African election.
In 2018, over 20 nations will go to the polls to choose presidents, legislators and municipals.
Presidential campaigns in both South Africa and Nigeria will also although their polls are not too close as African National Congress leader Cyril Ramaphosa and president Muhammadu Buhari are both hoping to win, respectively.
