Smoke in cabin forces Nigerian plane to make emergency landing in Ghana

Smoke in the cabin of a Nigerian plane heading to Ghana forced an emergency landing about 80 miles from Accra.

Officials of the airline made this known on Friday, March 9, 2018 in a statement.

“Arik Air flight W3 304 from Lagos to Accra on March 6, 2018 declared an emergency in line with standard operating procedures, when (an) unknown source of smoke was detected in the cabin”, the statement said.

The incident, according to the statement, occurred 80 miles (130 kilometres) from the Ghanaian capital but the plane landed safely in Accra without further incident.

The emergency landing by the Arik flight comes as the latest in a string of incidents involving the Nigerian aviation sector since January 1, 2018.

On January 25, 2018, hundreds of passengers were stranded at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on account of a chartered aircraft that broke down on the runway.

The aircraft had skidded off runway forcing planes that were due for landing to return to where they departed from and prevented take-off from Abuja.

On February 7, 2018, an emergency exit door fell off a plane owned by another local airline, Dana Air, as it landed in the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja after flying in from Lagos.

About six days later, an Atlanta-bound Delta airlines jet was forced to return to Lagos after a fire was detected in one of its engines with passengers using emergency slides to evacuate the plane.

On February 17, 2018 an Air Peace plane had to delay landing in Akure, Ondo state because cows had strayed onto the runway.

Days after, another Dana Air plane overshot the runway at Port Harcourt on February 20, 2018 due to heavy rain and flooding.
