These super building projects are going to transform major cities across Africa

A new Africa is evolving with the development of more modern urban cities in the continent

This urbanization trend also comes with growing population. Thus, government and private investors are building new cities to meet infrastructure needs of the people. These housing estate & settlements are incorporated into the larger developmental plans of Africa.

Some of these projects are currently under-construction and poised to shape the future of their respective countries and Africa. The list is below.

The Eko Atlantic City Lagos, Nigeria

Eko Atlantic city is being built on a reclaimed land from the Atlantic Ocean. The city is next to Victoria Island, Lagos – the biggest and fastest growing city in West Africa. The city is to become the new financial epicentre of West Africa by 2020.

Eko Atlantic city is of the size of the Manhattan district of New York City and planned to be Africa’s first modern smart city.

The development of the 10 million square metres of land is being financed by South Energyx Nigeria Limited.

The reclamation and construction of the city begin in 2010, and the first residential pearl towers are expected to be completed by 2017.

New Cairo Capital Cairo, Egypt

The New Cairo Capital is an estate development at the East of downtown Cairo. The project is a 270-square-mile hub with 21 new residential districts — enough housing for five million people.

The project cost is estimated at $45 billion and is being financed by the China Fortune Land Development Company.

New Cairo Capital is to feature 1250 religious centres, 2000 schools and colleges, 600 medical facilities and world largest park.

The construction begins in 2015 and expected to be completed by 2022.

The King City – Western Region, Ghana

The King City project is a 2500 acres commercial cum residential land development in Western Region of Ghana.

The project is estimated at $600 million and it is being financed by the Renaissance Group.

The discovery of major oil fields just 60km offshore of Takoradi is transforming the region into a new metropolis. Hence, this project to meet the housing and facilities needs from the boom in the mining and energy sector boom in the region.

The King city project is planned to change the holistic lifestyle of people in the region. 80,000 residents are expected to be able to live, work and play in one geographical location.

The project commenced in 2015 and expected to be completed by 2022.

The Tatu City Nairobi Kenya

The Tatu city project is another massive development that aimed at decentralizing Kenya’s urban centre to the north of Nairobi.

Tatu city would be sited on 1,035 hectares of land, 25 kilometres from the capital, Nairobi. 77,000 residents, alongside mixed-use for schools, commercial activities and a manufacturing complex, are planned to live in the city.

Schools and businesses are already operational in the Tatu city.

The project is estimated to $337 million and financed by the Rendeavour Group. The project commenced in 2013 and expected to be completed by 2022.

The Kpone-Appolonia City Accra, Ghana

The Kpone-Appolonia city is a 2300 acres mixed-use land development outskirt of Accra. Just like the Tatu city of Nairobi, it is expected to shift/ease commercial activities in the capital city, Accra.

The project is also christened the city of Light, and it is being financed the Rendeavour Group. The estimated cost of the project is $600 million.

The project is expected to be completed in 2022.

The first 500 housing units in the city are accepted to be delivered by December 2017.
