Construction to start on $1bn Virgin City in Nigeria

In Cross Rivers state, the governor has announced the commencement date on a $1 billion project called 'Virgin City'.

The proposed city will be located near Industrial Boulevard in Calabar and according to the proposed plans, will have a different market which each catering to specific items like building materials, auto parts, clothes, and wood. It also proposes that the city will contain a dance square, schools of all levels, hospital, golf arena, water world fairground and an artificial lake.

Ayade spoke at the ceremony where he officially announced the commencement date of construction saying that the motivation behind the decision for the 'Virgin City' was as a result of plans to build a deep seaport in the area.

"Construction work on the seaport starts by January 15, with 35,000 workers at its peak, we need to provide accommodation and recreational facilities for them," Ayade said.

The governor also spoke on the benefits of the 'Virgin City' saying, "Recruitment of labor, emphasis will be given to the host community. So the host community, you have a priority role to play. Also, we will ensure that if there are small short contracts to be given, again, this community will have priority because we want to ensure that you become stable because we don’t want to build an estate that the community itself will not afford to live in."

The proposed project is being undertaken by a Chinese firm called Mark Sino Construction Company Limited.
