2017 budget to get to the President next week

Today marks 4 months and 14 days after the document was submitted to the legislative, and speedy passage was promised by the leaders of the parliament.

The leader of the Nigeria's upper house of parliament, Senator Ahmed Lawal, has revealed that the country’s 2017 budget is to be passed over to the executive for accent next week.

This news was disclosed to journalists after meeting President Buhari on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at the state house.

"By next week ... we should be able to finish our own work and pass the budget to Mr. President to sign," he told reporters.

Mr. Lawan stated the legislative body should have passed the budget in March or April, 2017 but was constraints by many legislative duties. He added that it is currently doing everything possible to make up the lost time.

President Muhammadu Buhari had presented the 2017 budget to the joint legislative houses on Tuesday, 13 December, 2016. The early submission of the document was believed would enhance quick passage of the 7.298 trillion naira ($23.24 billion) budget, but usually political hurdles still affect its passage.

This news is coming as a relief after the Senate Committee Chairman on Appropriation, Senator Danjuma Goje, raised an alarm of a missing budget during plenary on Wednesday, April 26, 2017.
