Gwamna gave the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Monday.

The KEDCO boss said power generation was at its all-time best due to such effort.

He said that if what was being generated was exhaustively distributed, power supply would improve greatly across the country.

Gwamna noted that there was deliberate effort by the present administration in the country to improve power generation since its inception in 2015, a move he noted had yielded fruit in 1,000MW yearly.

He noted that for Nigeria to develop its industrial and manufacturing sectors to achieve economic diversification in the country and reduce unemployment, government must be improved and sustained.

“For the first time, we are having our generated power at an all-time best. What is being generated today has never been generated before in this country. This is commendable.

“If what is now being generated is successfully distributed to every household in the country, there will be improved power supply across the country.

“There has been conscious effort by the Federal Government to improve the power sector, knowing full well that it holds the key to our economic diversification plan and reduction in youth unemployment.

“We know of on-going efforts by the World Bank and the Federal Government to ensure enough investment in downstream (distribution), network stability and provision of more transformers to address the lingering crisis in the power sector.

“Yearly, 1000MW is being added to the national grid and if government sustains that, then our industrialisation and improvement of the manufacturing sector will be on course,’’ he said.

The managing director appealed for more investment in transmission to ensure exhaustive distribution of power generated,to meet the purpose of its generation.

He called on electricity consumers to always pay their bills to keep the distribution companies in business, adding that DisCos must make consumer satisfaction their priority.

Dr Jamilu Gwamna, the Managing Director, Kano Distribution Company of Nigeria (KEDCO) has commended the Federal Government for improving in power generation in the country.

They made this submission in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Wednesday, after the announcement of the results of the Presidential and National Assembly elections held on Saturday.

NAN reports that INEC declared Buhari re-elected having polled 15,191,847 votes, winning in 19 states, to defeat other 72 candidates including Atiku Abubakar, the Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 11, 255,978 votes and won 17 states and the FCT, to occupied the second position.

NAN also reports that Buhari won nine out of the 11 LGAs in Gombe State, polling a total of 402, 961 votes as against People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate, Atiku Abubakar who polled 138, 484 votes.

Dr Jamilu Gwamna, a chieftain of the APC, described the victory of President Buhari as electrifying, adding that it was a reaffirmation of hope that Nigeria would get better for the masses.

“Mr President’s victory is electrifying especially for us in Gombe. The sick had recovered as a result of the victory.

“It is victory for democracy and a confirmation of the love of the people for President Buhari.

“The will of the people prevailed so we are happy,” Gwamna said.

Reacting to the PDP’s dissatisfaction with the result, Gwamna said: “ Let them go to court. When President Buhari lost in all those years, he went to court and never resulted to violence."

Abdullah Suleiman, a trader said that the victory particularly for him was a demonstration of the political maturity of the country, adding that it was violence free.

Suleiman added that the victory of Mr president was victory for the fight against corruption, noting that corrupt persons would have to relocate from Nigeria very soon.

He commended INEC for its effort in giving Nigerians free, fair and credible elections.

Also, Hajiya Zainab Ismail, a housewife in Yelenguruza Quarters said: “I was worried that if the president didn’t win N-power and other social intervention programmes would stop.

“I know a lot of youths and pupils who are on the programmes that may be sent to hunger and poverty if the president had lost.

“I prayed for him to win and Allah did it. So I have hope that those people benefiting from the programmes would be taken care of in the next four years.

Simon Joseph, N-power beneficiary from Gombe, said: ”I have hope. I have been down but on hearing the announcement, I am now fine.”

NAN also reports that since the announcement of President Buhari as the winner of the election, youths took to the streets to celebrate, chanting “sai baba” “ four plus four dole” “baba oyoyo”.

The octogenarian, who resides at Yelenguruza Quarters area of Gombe metropolis said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Gombe.

She said it was the duty of every Nigerian to vote for candidate of his or her choice, adding that “the beauty of democracy lies in one’s ability to choose who leads the people.

“I am ready to cast my vote. I have been doing that for years and I will do it as long as God gives me breath.

“Election has been a vital part of governance where everyone has the right to choose whoever he or she wants to lead them. This is the beauty of democracy because of the power of choice.

“My grandchildren will be taking me to Dakin Kowa today ahead of tomorrow’s election, where my polling unit is so that I can cast my vote for my preferred candidates,’’ she said.

Usman decried the level of political thuggery and violence that were recorded every electioneering year in the country, adding that election in the past could be likened to a political funfair of some sort.

She also decried the low level of political participation by women, adding that women should make politics part of their lives by coming out to cast their votes during elections.

The octogenarian appealed to the youths to shun violence, adding that the country belonged to them and whatever the actions taken may affect the youths in the nearest future.

I am ready to cast my vote, says 82-year-old woman

<h1>The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says 1,394,393 voters are expected to take part in the Feb.16 and March 2 general election in Gombe state.</h1>

Malama Maryam Gana, INEC Acting Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, in the state made this known on Friday in Gombe at a Town Hall Meeting.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was held between INEC, Women Groups and Gender Focused Civil Society Organisations in the state.

Gana said the increase in eligible voters following the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) had resulted in increase in number of voting points from 2,471 to 2,988 to ease congestion.

“As at Feb. 6, 280, 508 Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) have been printed and distributed in the state.

“Out of the number, 197, 705 have so far been collected by 124, 399 male and 73, 306 female, leaving a balance of 82, 803,” she said.

Gana decried poor participation of women in politics, noting that they have key role to play in electoral process in the country in view of their population.

According to her, out of the 32 governorship candidates in the state, only one is female.

“For senatorial candidates, there are 45 males and six females, while in the House of Representatives, there are 68 males and eight females.

“The State House of Assembly has 253 males and 18 females, so, the women need to do more,” she said.

Hajiya Zuriyatu Abubakar, the Chief Executive Officer, Wildan Care Foundation, said there was need for women to come out and vote in the forthcoming election.

Abubakar added that women in Nigeria have the right to determine who should lead the country.

“We have the power to determine who leads us in Nigeria and Gombe state. Many do not know that is why we have remained in our shells.

“We must enlighten them on the rationale to participate, as well as suggest strategies to enhance women participation.

“This is why the foundation is partnering with INEC to drive the enhancement of women participation in political decision making,” she said.

Mr Ibrahim Yusuf, Chairman, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in the state advised women to educate their children and youths to jettison acts violence in during the election.

Mrs Bashemath Umar, Vice-President 1, National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Gombe State chapter said women had been educating their children and would continue to do.

Umar expressed confidence that the election would be violence-free in the state.

She lauded women who had secured nomination to participate in the election, adding that the gesture would encourage more women to participate in future elections.

1.3m voters to participate in general election in Gombe state – INEC

<h1>Mr Alhassan Yahaya, Zone E Vice-President, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has advised journalists to rely on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for results of the forthcoming general elections.</h1>

Yahaya, who gave the advice during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Gombe, also urged newsmen to be conversant with the extant electoral laws in the discharge of their duties.

According to him, announcing results that have not been declared by INEC is a crime and a dis-service to journalism, a profession, he notes prides on accuracy and objectivity.

“I call on journalists to rely on information from INEC during the forthcoming general elections. Do not rely on social media report or anybody or organisation other than INEC.

“The commission is the only body mandated to announce any election result and that must be respected, as any violation is against the ethics of journalism.

“We must not use what we have heard during voting to influence our reports, but wait patiently on INEC to give the figures to be announced,’’ he said.

“As journalists, our job is to educate, enlighten and sensitise Nigerians with the accurate and factual news report; in doing that, we must be objective and not partisan.’’

Yahaya also called on journalists to be aware of the dangers of fake news as well as the credibility of news report, appealing that they should not be used as purveyors of fake news.

He also urged security agencies to always collaborate with journalists and other stakeholders for the success of the planned general elections.
