<ul><li>IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva says AI will impact roughly 40% of global employment.</li><li>She expects advanced economies to be more affected than emerging markets and developing economies.</li><li>"In most scenarios, AI will likely worsen overall inequality," she wrote in a <a data-link-role-code="open_new_tab" href="https://www.imf.org/en/Blogs/Articles/2024/01/14/ai-will-transform-the-global-economy-lets-make-sure-it-benefits-humanity">blog post</a>.</li></ul>

"Advanced economies face greater risks from AI — but also more opportunities to leverage its benefits — compared with emerging market and developing economies," Georgieva wrote in a blog post on Sunday, citing the IMF's <a data-link-role-code="open_new_tab" href="https://www.imf.org/en/Publications/Staff-Discussion-Notes/Issues/2024/01/14/Gen-AI-Artificial-Intelligence-and-the-Future-of-Work-542379?cid=bl-com-SDNEA2024001">recent analysis</a> on the subject.

This is because of AI's "ability to impact high-skilled jobs," Georgieva said. And in the case of advanced economies, some 60 percent of jobs may be affected by AI, she added.

"Roughly half the exposed jobs may benefit from AI integration, enhancing productivity. For the other half, AI applications may execute key tasks currently performed by humans, which could lower labor demand, leading to lower wages and reduced hiring," Georgieva wrote.

"In the most extreme cases, some of these jobs may disappear," she added.

In comparison, Georgieva expects emerging markets and developing economies to "face fewer immediate disruptions from AI."

Nonetheless, Georgieva called on policymakers to guard against the potential inequality and social tensions that AI might bring. She also asked that countries put in place "comprehensive social safety nets and offer retraining programs for vulnerable workers."

The IMF is not alone in sounding warning calls on AI. In March, Goldman Sachs said in a report that AI could <a data-link-role-code="open_new_tab" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/generative-ai-chatpgt-300-million-full-time-jobs-goldman-sachs-2023-3">disrupt over 300 million jobs</a>.

<a data-link-role-code="open_new_tab" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/college-degrees-less-important-as-ai-spreads-linkedin-vp-2023-12">LinkedIn vice president Annesh Raman</a> said in a podcast interview in November that AI would reduce the value of technical skills, making soft skills more important.

<ul><li>Russia has gotten its hands on North Korean missiles and is using them on Ukraine, says White House.</li><li>National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Russia had used them in two recent attacks.</li><li>Kirby said he expects future Russian attacks to rely on North Korea's missiles.&nbsp;</li></ul>

"Our information indicates that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea recently provided Russia with ballistic missile launchers and several dozen ballistic missiles," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2024/01/04/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-and-nsc-coordinator-for-strategic-communications-john-kirby-january-4-2024/">said</a> at a press conference.

Kirby told journalists that Russian forces had fired North Korea's missiles on two separate attacks on December 30 and January 2.

"We expect Russia and North Korea to learn from these launches, and we anticipate that Russia will use additional North Korean missiles to target Ukraine's civilian infrastructure and to kill innocent Ukrainian civilians," Kirby said.

North Korea is shaping up to become <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-russia-munitions-weapons-supplier-uk-intelligence-2023-10">one of Russia's major arms suppliers</a>. The hermit kingdom has sent Russia <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/north-korea-russia-munitions-weapons-supplier-uk-intelligence-2023-10">large quantities of ammunition</a> to support the latter's invasion of Ukraine.

The UK's Ministry of Defence said in an <a href="https://twitter.com/DefenceHQ/status/1717442824927363583">intelligence dispatch</a> in October that North Korea's weapon shipments could allow it "to become one of Russia's most significant foreign arms suppliers, alongside Iran and Belarus."

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has also previously endorsed President Vladimir Putin. "We will always support the decisions of President Putin and the Russian leadership," he said <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russians-treat-kim-jong-un-to-walrus-show-ballet-date-2023-9">when he met</a> the Russian president in September.

Interestingly, Russia isn't the only user of North Korean weapons. The Ukrainians have also been using North Korean-made rockets on the battlefield, per the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/96e1f526-ae3d-4cff-bc37-8f9dd7d5975f">Financial Times</a>.

Ukrainian forces told the FT that a "friendly" country had "seized" the North Korean rockets from a ship, but didn't provide further details.

That said, the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-using-north-korean-rockets-against-russian-forces-2023-7">Ukrainians weren't fans of the rockets</a>, which they said were "very unreliable and do crazy things sometimes."

Nonetheless, Kirby said it was troubling that North Korea had stepped up its support for Russia.

"These North Korean ballistic missiles are capable of ranges of approximately 900 kilometers. That's about 550 miles," Kirby said at the press conference.

"This is a significant and concerning escalation in the DPRK's support for Russia," he continued.

Spears took to Instagram on Wednesday to quash <a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/britney-spears-charli-xcx-rumored-collaboration">rumors of her recording a new album</a>.

"Just so we're clear most of the news is trash!!!&nbsp;They keep saying I'm turning to random people to do a new album I will never return to the music industry !!!" Spears <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C1p-tjPPn0T/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link">wrote</a>.

But Spears says she has still been writing new songs, albeit for other artists.

"When I write, I write for fun or I write for other people," Spears wrote, adding that she'd ghostwritten over 20 songs in the past two years.

Spears has previously said that she doesn't plan on making a comeback.

Spears said in her memoir <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-woman-in-me-britney-spears-book-memoir-highlights-2023-10">'The Woman In Me'</a> that her <a href="https://www.insider.com/inside-britney-spears-conservatorship-freebritney-movement-2020-12">conservatorship</a> had been "deadly" for her music career.

"Pushing forward in my music career is not my focus at the moment," Spears wrote.

"It's time for me not to be someone who other people want; it's time to actually find myself," she continued.

The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ceo-elon-musk">Tesla CEO</a> spent his Christmas holidays slamming the US president's treatment of his company.

"Let's not forget the White House giving Tesla the cold shoulder, excluding us from the EV summit and crediting GM with 'leading the electric car revolution' in the same quarter that they delivered 26 electric cars (not a typo) and Tesla delivered 300 thousand," Musk <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1739023377719803991">wrote</a> on X on Sunday.

Musk expanded on his criticisms of Biden the next day when he accused Biden of being beholden to the unions.

"Most of the Democratic Party is controlled by the unions — they carry far more weight than the environmentalists — and Biden particularly so (he gladly admits it)," Musk wrote in another <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1739367032498319379">X post</a> on Christmas Day, while reposting a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/speeches-remarks/2021/05/18/remarks-by-president-biden-on-a-future-made-in-america/">speech</a> Biden delivered in May 2021.

"In Biden's speech, posted on WhiteHouse.gov, he literally says 'the UAW elected me,'" Musk continued. "The White House cold shoulder started well before I 'said controversial things.'"

<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-wasnt-invited-to-white-house-electric-cars-summit-2021-8">Tesla's exclusion from Biden's EV summit</a> in 2021 has been a huge bugbear for Musk.

The mercurial billionaire has <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/after-months-complaint-by-elon-musk-biden-acknowledges-tesla-2022-02-08/">often referenced</a> the incident, most recently at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-tells-advertises-get-lost-twitter-dealbook-summit2023-11">The New York Times Dealbook Summit</a> last month.

"They held an electric vehicle summit at the White House and specifically refused to let Tesla attend. Biden went on to add insult to injury and publicly said GM was leading the electric car revolution," Musk told moderator Andrew Ross Sorkin.

The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/joe-biden-elon-musk-feud-tesla-union-republican-06-2022">ill will between the two men</a> would probably explain Musk's shifting political allegiances.

The billionaire, who previously <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1519852213698502656?s=20">said</a> he supported Barack Obama, told Sorkin at the same summit that he <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-doubts-vote-joe-biden-donald-trump-president-2023-11">won't be voting for Biden's reelection</a>.

In November 2022, Musk <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-support-ron-desantis-president-2024-2022-11">voiced his support</a> for GOP presidential candidate and Florida Gov. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/who-is-florida-governor-ron-desantis-life-politics-2020-3">Ron DeSantis</a>.

"My preference for the 2024 presidency is someone sensible and centrist. I had hoped that would be the case for the Biden administration, but have been disappointed so far," Musk said in an <a href="https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1596322719372480513">X post</a> at the time.

<ul><li>Sam Altman is returning as the CEO of OpenAI.</li><li>He was fired from the job on Friday, kicking off a weekend of chaos in Silicon Valley.</li><li>OpenAI said they'd have a new initial board of Bret Taylor, Larry Summers, and Adam D'Angelo.</li></ul>

The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-chat-gpt-2023-1">ChatGPT</a> maker announced Altman's return in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday morning. OpenAI said they "reached an agreement in principle" for Altman's return.

The company also announced it will welcome "a new initial board" consisting of Bret Taylor, Larry Summers, and Adam D'Angelo. Taylor, a former Salesforce executive, will serve as board chair.

The news comes after a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-microsoft-openai-ceo-mess-why-it-matters-chatgpt-2023-11">chaotic weekend</a> in Silicon Valley.

Altman was fired as OpenAI's CEO on Friday. OpenAI's board said in a <a href="https://openai.com/blog/openai-announces-leadership-transition">statement</a> that Altman "was not consistently candid in his communications with the board" but did not give further details.

His return to the job comes just days after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Altman will be <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-has-hired-former-openai-ceo-sam-altman-2023-11">leading Microsoft's new advanced AI research team</a>.

Shortly after OpenAI broke the news, Altman <a href="https://twitter.com/sama/status/1727207458324848883">wrote</a> on X that when he decided to join Microsoft, he thought "it was clear that was the best path for me and the team."

Nadella has also commented on Altman's return, <a href="https://twitter.com/satyanadella/status/1727207661547233721">writing</a> that they are "encouraged by the changes to the OpenAI board."

"We believe this is a first essential step on a path to more stable, well-informed, and effective governance," Nadella wrote.
