<p>On Thursday, September 21, 2023, a Ghanaian mother had to rush to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters when news got to her that her son had been arrested. Marking a significant day in Ghana’s history as a holiday for Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday, this mother should’ve probably been taking a break to rest. But she was restless.</p>

<p>The Ghana Police Service had put on their usual boorish act; an act that many people have experienced at the various stations across the country but can’t make sense of. An ‘order from above’ said this woman could not see her son. Neither was she allowed to follow due process in an attempt to bail her son. The events leading to the trauma this mother had to go through question the Ghana Police Service’s understanding of what their task is in dealing with civilians.</p>

<p>This young man woke up in an enthusiastic mood to play some basketball on a holiday, a sport loved by many young Ghanaians. On his way back, he was arrested by the police. His crime? Wearing a black shirt in a vicinity where peaceful demonstrators were being targeted by the people who should be protecting them.</p>

<p>Around the same time, a young Ghanaian lawyer was being treated like a criminal for his intervention to try and protect a journalist. Amidst all the chaos around a host of arrests that had happened, a journalist decided to document some of the happenings between the police and civilians at one of the police stations where arrested protestors were kept. About 5 police officers rushed to her in a bid to stop her from recording what was going on. When the lawyer, known as Rockson stepped in to help with what the journalist would later reveal was a physical assault by male policemen, he was arrested with charges around the lines of ‘preventing an arrest’. The interesting part is, the journalist was not arrested.</p>

<p>In the weeks leading to September 21, 2023, organisers of #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration had informed the Ghana Police Service of their intent to have a peaceful demonstration, as the law requires. The police had engaged the organisers throughout the process with both parties having aligned on the 3-day demonstration from September 21 to September 23, 2023.</p>

<p>Less than 24 hours before the start of the demonstration, the Ghana Police Service released a statement with the heading ‘Police file application to prohibit planned demonstration by Democracy Hub Group’. The release claimed the police had ‘served the organisers of a group identifying itself as Democracy Hub in connection with planned demonstration within the vicinity of Jubilee House from Thursday, 21st to Saturday, 23rd September 2023.’</p>

<p>Responding to the police, Democracy Hub wrote in a press release saying ‘We wish to put on record that the Ghana Police Service has not served us with any application and we are unaware of what exactly the police application is about’.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ghana Police Service released another statement refuting the claim of non-service of court process by the conveners of Democracy Hub, saying they were served through their lawyers Atuguba &amp; Associates. That was where the exchange of documents ended. The next day would go on as planned - or maybe not.</p>

<p>In the early hours of Thursday, September 21, 2023, Ghanaians started gathering around the 37 Lorry Station as planned for the peaceful demonstration. Commuters who ply the road started sharing videos of heavy police presence along the stretch. From full gears to police on horses, the scenes and outlook for these policemen and policewomen were not usual for many Ghanaians.</p>

<p>By 9 am, a video had started going viral even before the protest had started. Police had arrested a group of young people, and put them in a bus headed towards the Accra Regional Police Headquarters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“<em>This is not a democracy,</em>” Oliver Barker-Vormawor said as the first group of people who had been arrested were being transported to the police headquarters. He then called on all available lawyers to help with representation for the people who had been arrested.</p>

<p>The next hours saw more breaking stories of people getting arrested than the initially planned peaceful protest. One person granting a calm interview to a Ghanaian TV station was arrested on camera while eyewitnesses saw people change their outfits to avoid being arrested without a chance to explain. This was how the young man whose mother was at the police station found himself in a cell on a memorial day for Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday. Just by wearing black.</p>

<p>Afia Blue Tafari is a known lawyer on the Ghanaian timeline for social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Her storytelling of her encounter with a police officer for a road traffic offence case was followed by many, giving a sense of a Ghanaian barrister who wants better for the West African country and representation for the voiceless.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Thursday, when news of arrests started trickling in from all corners of Ghana’s capital, Accra, that was Afia’s mood - helping the best way she could for all who needed representation and without a fee.</p>

<p>“<em>If you haven’t spoken to law yet, send me a dm of your name and the station you have been sent to</em>,” Afia wrote on X, a refreshing post on a timeline that was filled with uncertain fate for the arrested individuals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As this statement went viral at the time, the police started distributing demonstrators in their custody in what seemed to be a strategy to frustrate lawyers who were willing to help more than a lack of space to keep people in custody. Lawyers were being asked to go back to the headquarters where the arrests were booked when they showed up for their clients at the venue of their cells.</p>

<p>In an update from Lawyer Prince Ganaku on X Spaces that had run for hours throughout the demonstration, the barrister gave the first sense of the situation of how dealings with the Ghana Police Service were ongoing, calling on other lawyers to help as the arrests were getting more and more.</p>

<p>“<em>The protestors have been arrested in batches. I came here when I was prompted by the arrested protestors,</em>” Lawyer Prince Ganaku said on the X Spaces.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“<em>When I got here, I spoke with the charge office and I was told some of them are in the cells of the charge office. Some of them are in there, some of them are in interrogation, some of them are in the barracks.</em></p>

<p>“<em>The lawyers have been told we won’t be allowed to see those who were arrested earlier, the first batch of people because they have been distributed across the cells,</em>” he said.</p>

<p>Lawyer Afia Blue Tafari collaborated Prince’s experience writing on X:</p>

<p>“<em>They’re not letting lawyers see anyone. They’re transferring protesters to other stations. When you go there they tell you since they processed them at HQ, you have to bail them at HQ. Mafia tactics. Make noise.</em>”</p>

<p>Prince added he and another lawyer were trying to get a list of all the people who had been arrested to have a chance of representing them. He then made a call to all lawyers who had some time on their hands to pass by and help.</p>

<p>Within moments of this news breaking, the official names of people in custody had been gathered with their respective locations. As most people on the timeline were known by their X handle, others had to help these lawyers with their official names.</p>

<p>That, however, did not mean the task was made any easier.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the key people who initiated the X Spaces Lawyer Prince had earlier given the update on, was Ghanaian journalist Bridget Otoo trying to help the mother whose son had been arrested on his return from basketball training.</p>

<p>In an attempt to help her see her son, the situation quickly escalated as the young gentleman called Gheorghe (@Boss_gheorghe) who was with Bridget Otoo was picked by the police.</p>

<p>“<em>A woman spoke to me about her son who was playing basketball around Christ The King, the basketball area there,</em>” Bridget narrates the story of how Gheorghe was picked up.</p>

<p>“<em>The boy was supposed to play basketball and the police in their swoop as they do with other crime event just carried him along. She’s been here trying to hear from her son. And she spoke to me. I get to the gate and I tell the policeman to go in there and he tells me there is nobody there. I said ‘but you have just taken people in there’. He said he will not allow us in.</em></p>

<p>“<em>While I was waiting the police charged at us. We didn’t provoke them, nothing. We were just standing. He opened the gate and charged at us picking as many people as they could grab. I want to believe because I am a woman that is why they didn’t grab me. I have the phone of a gentleman who is still inside,</em>” she added.</p>

<p>That gentleman was Gheorghe, whose pickup was captured live on the ongoing X Spaces he had helped initiate with over 1,500 listeners on at the time.</p>

<p>One of Bridget’s fears during her narration turned out to be exactly what her nightmares had been. “<em>At the time Vanessa was in there and I was scared for Vanessa. Because we had sent her out and the police had guns, they were being hostile to anybody who is in there,</em>” Bridget said.</p>

<p>Ghanaian journalist with X handle @OleleSalvador who had been giving minute-by-minute updates on the #OccupyJulorbiHouse wrote on the situation with a video attached:</p>

<p>“<em>One of my colleague journalists who was a victim of the ‘Rambo’ style apprehension and manhandling action by the @GhPoliceService narrates her harrowing experience.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>“<em>Her crime? Recording the mini-chaos between the police and some protestors in the yard, even as a journalist.&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>“<em>Her phone has been seized.</em>”</p>

<p>Vanessa was the journalist Lawyer Richmond Rockson tried to help following police officers rushing at her over her decision to record happenings - leading to the lawyer’s arrest.</p>

<p>“<em>My ‘crime’ was my intervention when several officers of @GhPoliceService manhandled this journalist. I was physically assaulted by some officers, and detained for hours. Thanks to my learned friends, I have been released. Be assured I’ll take steps to remedy this recklessness.</em>”</p>

<p>Vanessa was not the only journalist who had an encounter with the police on the day. BBC journalist Thomas Naadi was ‘detained’ by the Ghana police and later released according to information from his colleague Akwasi Sarpong.</p>

<p>The Ghana Police Service in an official statement addressing this particular issue claimed the report was ‘erroneous’ and the ‘police would like to put on record that the report is false and should be disregarded’.</p>

<p>They further explained that the journalist was picked among a group of people but identified himself during the screening process and was ‘immediately allowed to go’.</p>

<p>The Ghana Journalists Association refuted the claims by the police, highlighting other journalists who were maltreated during the demonstration.</p>

<p>As all these were ongoing, lawyers on the day had doubled their efforts to try and get protestors in police custody out before the close of day. They had received information on the arrested being arraigned in court the next day and having to spend the night in cells with no bail.</p>

<p>In one of her many updates on the day, Lawyer Afia Blue Tafari wrote:</p>

<p>“<em>Unfortunately it’s unlikely that anyone will be granted bail today. The police say they’ll arraign them tomorrow in court for any bail application to be made. Sad.</em>”</p>

<p>While the lawyers, demonstrators, friends and family of the arrested were making sacrifices on various grounds, the topic was gaining momentum online with a lot of backlash aimed towards the Ghana Police Service and anyone who had a voice in Ghana. Among these groups of people were celebrities in Ghana. And of course, the media.</p>

<p>During the #EndSARS protest in Nigeria, a lot of sympathy was triggered from their West African counterparts. From government officials, musicians, actors and actresses, top media personalities to the average Ghanaian, messages of support kept trickling in towards Nigeria. People with influence in Nigeria also got involved.</p>

<p>The quest online as lawyers tried to get bail for arrested participants of the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demo was to get solidarity from all the voices that mattered in Ghana. That meant some extreme online measures of calling people out for their actions and inactions, resulting in messages from celebrities that got criticised, deleting of posts by top personalities who were not aware of the ongoing situation and calling on all the people who could help amplify the cries of the Ghanaian youth.</p>

<p>Posts started coming in soon with the criticism online exchanges usually have.</p>

<p>In the closing hours of the day, a notice that calmed nerves was put out by the lawyers who had been heroines and heroes of the day. The police had agreed to grant bail to all the arrested. The good news was they needed 10 sureties who could then stand in for all arrested on the day due to their involvement in the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstration.</p>

<p>Lawyer Afia Blue Tafari gave the update on X, writing:</p>

<p>“<em>Regional command just granted bail. They need 10 people as sureties. If you are around please avail yourself @OleleSalvador nb.</em></p>

<p><em>“Adults, preferably closely related, and it will help if they are property owners, professionals or civil servants,</em>” she added.</p>

<p>A sense of hope for the first time on the day resonated across X timeline, where most of the conversations on the day had happened. Hope not in the system, but in the young lawyers who yearned to push through the day for the freedom of those arrested.</p>

<p>Results started coming in in batches as the arrests had been. People in the different police stations were being released. A sense of relief could be seen in the updates from the many lawyers who had put in their best on the day to make things happen. Some of them could now tap into their sense of humour.</p>

<p>“<em>They took all the stubborn boys to Shukura. Their boss is @thebodjona,</em>” Lawyer Afia could finally share a joke she had planned all afternoon since seeing the list in a humour post.</p>

<p>By 8:30pm, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, one of the first batch of people to be arrested had been the last to be released. The timeline was filled with some accounts of their experiences with the Ghana Police Service and a toned-down version of earlier requests. Citizens could breathe a sigh of relief knowing that all the arrested persons could finally go home.</p>

<p>In what looked like a peaceful approach by the Ghanaian youth to make their voices heard around the hardships and high cost of living in the West African country, the Ghana Police Service said no based on an ‘order from above’ and went ahead to arrest young Ghanaians who only wanted to exercise their human rights, in accordance with Ghana’s constitution.</p>

#OccupyJulorbiHouse: Ghanaian police mar peaceful protest with unlawful arrests

A peaceful demonstration by Ghanaian youth on Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day was marred by what most legal professionals deem as unlawful arrests by the Ghana police.

Young Ghanaians embarked on a peaceful protest for a better life; The police said no!

<h1>She matches (not a colour match) that with a blue cap worn backwards. A subtle blink of her small earrings pop up now and then in the camera she’s facing.</h1>

<p>Off the top of your head, this is typical of something Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale will do and you’re not far fetched from the truth.</p>

<p>In what seems like an overly exaggerated mimic that combines the art of occasionally bulging the eyeball, synchronised movement of the eyebrow and serious facial expressions that are to die for, Jackline does an impression of Shatta Wale that could have taken months for most people to nail. To her, it comes naturally. The words. The act. The flair.</p>

<p>“This is my favourite video of all time,” Jackline Mensah tells Pulse.com.gh of her doing what Shatta Wale does best - occasional rants.</p>

<p>With almost 70K followers on Instagram and 186K on TikTok, technology has paved a comfortable way for Jackline’s comedy career inside her grandmother’s house.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Her videos have almost always gone viral and for a typical teen or otherwise who periodically logs on to Instagram or TikTok, the name Jackline Mensah is a household name. Lovers of comedy who are mostly on their WhatsApp also have in the last few months had laughs courtesy of the young lady who is one of the queens of Ghana TikTok.</p>

<p>For instance, in March 2020, a few days after Ghana had recorded her first case(s) of the global pandemic coronavirus COVID-19, a video of Prophet Kofi Oduro rhetorically querying his congregation about fornication in his preaching went viral. The content of the video that aesthetically combined the moral lessons of the Bible and the flair of the cultural euphemism that come some Ghanaian Twi words was in itself funny. Only a genius could make it funnier.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jackline being that genius found the hack ending her on every single WhatsApp status in the country as she wore an oversized pink shirt, white trousers and yellow suspenders with remote control as her mic and a green towel to imitate Prophet Kofi Oduro’s occasional wiping off his sweat during his preachings. She had succeeded in making an already funny video funnier.</p>

<p>However, the bubbly Jackline Mensah in the videos online has a different personality offline. Growing up with her grandmother, the 19-year-old was and still is the shy type whose heart was not set on social media comedy despite being naturally comical. She recounts what her passion was when children in her family were ‘summoned like thieves’ during family gatherings to be asked what they hoped to be in the future. Paediatrician was on top of Jackline’s list until she realised she was just being peer pressured.</p>

<p>“I always wanted to be a paediatrician,” Jackline Mensah says.</p>

<p>“I love kids. But then, I realised I was following the crowd because my cousins were like I want to be a doctor, I want to be a nurse, I want to be a pilot, I want to be a lawyer, I had to also say something. I thought that was what I wanted to do.”</p>

<p>Practice makes perfect and the young 19-year-old who is yet to write her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) which is postponed because of coronavirus started her mimic trials with movies she watched. For her, she was setting herself up for a career she eventually found out she loves.</p>

<p>“Growing up again I found out I've got a passion for acting. I used to watch a lot of movies and sometimes after the movies are done showing, I get up and mimic some lines some people said and act it out. I then realised I need to do something about that.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I didn’t start this TikTok for fun but because I want to take acting as a full-time job,” she stresses.</p>

<p>Aside from the usual home art tutorials she runs herself through, the TikTok kind of comedy involves a little knowledge around technology - something the Ghanian TikTok sensation learned through trial and errors mostly with her grandmother’s phone before she got a personal one. At the age of 12, Jackline was all about phones because she also loved playing games. She would unknowingly find ways to fix the phone when something goes wrong without visiting the repairer's shop. When she got her first phone, it was mostly downloading songs, listening to songs and a little research. But her inquisitive behaviour will have her look for more, chancing on TikTok. Once she downloaded and saw people making videos that intrigued her, it was game on for her and game over for all others.</p>

<p>Producing a lot of videos on social media with high potency for virality is something that Jackline’s family members are getting used to. But her grandmother already loves it and that is enough for the young comic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Actually, my granny loves it,” Jackline says with excitement in her eyes and a smile on her face.</p>

<p>“The rest (of the family) are getting used to it and they will get used to it but once I’ve got my granny loving it, it’s enough.”</p>

<p>The attention though is something that becomes a challenge from time to time for Jackline. Being a ‘naturally shy person’ too much attention from all the love for her videos, the people she meets and all the opportunities that come with it are now sinking in for 19-year-old. It also has the aura of making her feel good putting smiles on people's faces. In all, the TikTok sensation is grateful for being surrounded by people who keep her humbled.</p>

<p>She aims, however, for success in what she does as she goes with ‘the flow’ despite it not paying right now.</p>

<p>“I believe everything starts with putting in hard work and eventually it is going to pay off. I am on the right track so no fears,” she says.</p>

<p>Inspired by the things around her, Jackline Mensah’s creativity oozes through the storylines of her videos, her act, facial expression, costume selections and most importantly the personality she backs it with.</p>

<p>In a world which has significantly changed in 2020, Jackline’s videos may have helped in one way or the other as human movements are restricted due to a battle against coronavirus COVID-19, online content consumption up on the rise and happy moments needed more than ever to boost mental health.</p>

<p>For one of Ghana’s queens of TikTok, she feels her impact on making people happy in their homes count as she tells Pulse.com.gh: “Even if I haven’t achieved anything, at least I’ve made a mark. I’ve left a mark I guess. That’s one of the best experiences ever!”</p>

<p>This release had been triggered by a viral video that had dominated the feeds on Ghana’s social media platforms.</p>

<p>Instant calls from Ghanaians including high profile celebrities like Sarkodie meant Ghana’s government had to act swiftly, triggering the notice from the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.</p>

<p>However, Ghana is not alone as other countries in Africa start diplomatic conversations with China amidst maltreatment of its people in the fight against coronavirus COVID-19.</p>

<p>With most countries wary of the threat of imported cases of COVID-19, China has come under fire for how they are segregating with the treatment of black migrants in their process.</p>

<p>The Global Times in China reported an imported case of a Nigeria national infecting the owner of a restaurant and two children in Guangzhou. Guangzhou has one of the largest African communities in Africa considering its trade with the continent. As the capital upgraded the risk level of COVID-19 in some districts from low to medium, a lot of Africans were going to be affected and videos have shown a lot of maltreatment for a segregated group as the nations deal with a global pandemic.</p>

<p>With social media being an easy way to send messages across the target audience, videos and photos of the suspected coronavirus-related xenophobia kept going viral. Another viral video shows a group of blacks dragging their language through the streets and complaining about how <em>“they are chasing us away”</em> and<em> “not making us sleep”</em> but “<em>just on the road”.</em></p>

<p>These conversations sparked talks in some home countries around the African continent, with one headline standing out in Kenya: “<strong><em>Kenyans in China: Rescue us from hell</em></strong>”.</p>

<p>Photos and videos of people sleeping on the floor on open streets have also been a topic of discussion on TV stations and local media platforms across Africa.</p>

<p><strong>Femi Gbajabiamila</strong>, Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives met with the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, tweeting about it with the caption:</p>

<p>Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement addressed the situation saying China has <em>“in some instances precipitated unfair response against foreigners particularly of African origin”. </em>It further stated the Ministry had received assurance from the Chinese Embassy in Nairobi that the Government of China takes seriously the situation and have asked locals in Guangzhou to take immediate action to safeguard the legitimate rights of Africans concerned.</p>

<p>Embassy of the Republic of Sierra Leon also took action of the situation with a statement, confirming the diplomats have been in constant communication and the Embassy is monitoring the situation.</p>

<p>In China, however, the narrative is different. <strong>Zhao Lijian</strong>, the Chinese Foreign Minister spokesman refuted the idea around China treating foreigners different. In a statement released on Easter Sunday, Zhao said:</p>

<p><em>“We are still facing great risks of imported cases and domestic resurgence. Particularly, as the pandemic spreads all over the world, imported cases are causing mounting pressure.</em></p>

<p><em>“All foreigners are treated equally. We reject differential treatment, and we have zero tolerance for discrimination.”</em></p>

<p>With pressure mounting from African diplomats, the situation seems to be getting better. Volunteers in China are making efforts to link African migrants to landlords and hotels who still accept foreigners. CNN reports most of the African migrants in China who are mainly traders and students had found shelter.</p>

<p>The risk that was being assessed, however, was the effects of the lack of good communication as a volunteer who granted an interview to CNN said : <em>“The authorities just don’t want them on the street”.</em></p>

<p>With the first case of coronavirus COVID-19 reported to be confirmed in Wuhan, China, conversations on social media and Africa suggest China should do better dealing with the effects of the virus and that virus-related xenophobia should not be in the books of China.</p>

African diplomats mount pressure on China over suspected coronavirus-related xenophobia

<h1>Standing behind the podium with Ghana’s coat of arms facing the audience, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo opened his remarks with the trademark ‘Fellow Ghanaians’.</h1>

<p>It was evident with subtle messages that a lot of thought had gone into the decision that was about to be announced.</p>

Anisuo, the name of Nana Addo's choice of cloth for his announcement of a partial lockdown in Ghana. It means drops of tears.

<p>The president a few days earlier had explained how his administration would consider every other option before a nationwide lockdown.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of Ghana’s Trades Union Congress (TUC), Nana Addo acknowledged although he had heard conversations around a lockdown to halt the spread of coronavirus disease COVID-19 in the country, the ordinary Ghanaian needed to be considered.</p>

<p><em>“People in Ghana are now talking about a lockdown,</em>” the President of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said.</p>

Akufo-Addo urged to meet traditional leaders over Coronavirus

<p><em>“Majority of people who will be affected by decisions of that nature are the working people of our country. The ordinary people of Ghana. They are the ones who will be affected and it is important for us to take into account the circumstances and conditions. When we lock down Accra, what are the consequences?”</em></p>

<p><em>“A responsible government is required to look at all the implications before decisions are made. And that is the exercise we are currently engaged in and I am hoping that much sooner than later we will come to an agreement on what those measures are and the Ghanaian people will be informed.”</em></p>

<p>By the time Nana Addo stood behind the podium close to midnight on Friday, March 27, 2020, the decision had been made. Whether the choice of time was a strategic move to halt people from panic moving or just a result of long decision-making meeting is yet to be known.</p>

<p>However, his choice of fashion was one that spoke volumes. This was a hard decision for the president to announce.</p>

<p>Adorned in his usual African print for all his previous three addresses around the coronavirus pandemic, the president wore a cloth called ‘Anisuo’ in one of Ghana’s local languages, Twi. It literally translates ‘drops of tears’ which was his mood ahead of telling the good people of his country there was a need to restrict their movement for at least 14 days.</p>

<p>To make it a little easier on the people, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo started to highlight some of the key difficult decisions that had yielded good results in an attempt to manage coronavirus disease COVID-19 spread in the West African country.</p>

<p>Among them was Ghana’s decision to close its borders as announced on March 21, 2020.</p>

<p>With 1030 people entering the country after the announcement being forced into mandatory quarantine with the state taking all the cost that came with it, 78 of the persons put under quarantine had tested positive for the virus at the time of Nana Addo’s lockdown address.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo then moved to emphasise on the fact that it was his job to protect the people of Ghana, referencing the oath he swore on January 7, 2017, when he was made President of the Republic of Ghana.</p>

<p>In what was a relevant clarification for what was about to be imposed on some citizens and residents of Ghana, Nana Addo said:&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>“All that government is doing is intended to achieve five (5) key objectives – limit and stop the importation of the virus; contain its spread; provide adequate care for the sick; limit the impact of the virus on social and economic life; and inspire the expansion of our domestic capability and deepen our self-reliance.”</em></p>

<p>Since importation of the virus had already been addressed with closed borders, the next point was to avoid its spread within the country.</p>

<p>Based on recommendations by the Ghana Health Service, Ghana’s president His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo, on powers granted under the Imposition of Restrictions Act, 2020 (Act 1012) restricted movement I the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area and the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area for a period of two weeks.</p>

<p><em>“It will give us the opportunity to try to halt the spread of the virus, and scale-up effectively contact tracing of persons who have come into contact with infected persons, test them for the virus, and, if necessary, quarantine and isolate them for treatment, should they prove to have the virus,” </em>Nana Addo said of his announced restrictions.</p>

<p>After outlining specific details of the partial lockdown, Ghana’s president would go on to say something that has been a favourite quote of the world as it battles the coronavirus pandemic: <em>“we know what to do to bring back our economy back to life. What we do not know how to do is to bring people back to life.”</em></p>

<p>Highlighting projections by the Bank of Ghana’s worst-case GDP growth rate scenario of 2.5% for 2020, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in a mixture of self praise of what his government had achieved in shaping Ghana’s economy and concern for the lives of the people it is his job to protect said:</p>

<p><em>“Fellow Ghanaians, with the Bank of Ghana predicting a worst-case GDP growth rate scenario of 2.5% for 2020, should the virus continue to linger for the rest of the year, the effects on our economy would be dire.&nbsp;</em></p>
