<h1>The acting Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the immediate ban on unauthorised use of unmarked and covered vehicle number plates across the country.</h1>

The ban was issued through a statement issued by the Force Spokesman, Mr Frank Mba, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Adamu gave the order following intelligence report that covered number plates might be used to commit electoral related offences before, during and after the Governorship and House of Assembly Elections slated for Saturday.

He warned that covering of vehicle number plates was a clear breach of road traffic Act and others laws of the land.

The police boss said that such practices could also impact negatively on national security and heighten criminal activities.

Adamu directed all Assistant Inspectors General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs) in the zonal and state commands to strictly enforce the order.

He warned further that any security personnel found escorting their principals with an unmarked vehicle or covered vehicle number plates, would be arrested and dealt with accordingly.

Elections: IGP Adamu bans use of unmarked, covered  vehicle number plates

<h1>The Nigeria Police Force said it has arrested 323 persons across the country for alleged electoral offences during the Feb. 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections.</h1>

The force had earlier arrested 128 persons for alleged electoral offences.

The Acting Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Mohammed Adamu, disclosed this at a meeting with officers in the ranks of Commissioners of Police and above on Monday in Abuja.

He said that two officers of the force paid the supreme price while some others were assaulted and injured while discharging their duties during the polls.

Adamu said that the Special Election Investigation Team (SEIT) had been directed to investigate all the cases, liaising with INEC to ensure prosecution.

He said that the perpetrators of the violence would be fished out and brought to justice no matter their status.

The police boss reassured Nigerians and the international community of the commitment of the force to work closely with INEC and other sister security agencies towards a peaceful election.

He said the personnel of the force should remain civil, firm, professional and apolitical in the discharge of their duties.

Adamu warned all political actors against violence and urged them to play the game in line with the Electoral Act.

“Doing otherwise shall attract the full and appropriate response from the police and other security agencies,” he said.

On the possibility of arming personnel at polling units, he insisted that no policeman would be allowed to carry arms at poling units.

He explained that it was against the electoral act and international law for officers to use arms at polling units.

Adamu said that the force would continue to pay officers their allowances ahead of their deployment for election duty.

He said that the meeting was aimed at debriefing strategic commanders and evaluating the performances of officers during the last elections.

The police boss said the meeting would also afford the force to perfect plans for the March 9 Governorship and State Assembly elections.

Police arrest 323 suspected electoral offenders

<h1>The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied that the former Director-General of the service, Mr Lawal Daura, is still in control of its affairs.</h1>

Mr Peter Afunanya, Public Relations Officer of the service disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

“While the Service debunks this false belief, it warns that any person or group that further engages him or his representatives/associates does so at their own peril,” he said.

He said that the service would not tolerate acts of impersonation designed to undermine it and would decisively deal with such persons no matter how highly-placed.

Afunanya enjoined the public to avoid circumstances under which unsuspecting persons might be deceived.

The spokesman reiterated the service’s continued commitment to the core values of professionalism, selflessness, vigilance and the rule of law.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Daura was sacked by the then acting President, Yemi Osinbajo for ordering personnel of the service to lay siege to the National Assembly.

<h1>The acting Inspector-General of Police (I-GP), Mr Mohammed Adamu has warned Nigerians to steer clear of human rights violations and all manner of impunity and jungle justice.</h1>

The Nigeria Police Force had on Feb. 6 arrested six suspects for beating a 24 year-old woman accused of stealing a cell phone in Benin.

A statement by the Force spokesman, ACP Frank Mba disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja.

Adamu said that all cases of human rights violation and jungle justice should be reported to the nearest relevant authority.

He, however, warned that henceforth violators of the rights of human persons would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Adamu expressed concern over all manners of dehumanising treatment meted out to Nigerians by unscrupulous persons.

He said that the police would not condone any act of impunity and all forms of inhuman treatment in the country.

He said that the police under his watch would do everything possible and within the ambit of the law to end the scourge and effectively prosecute all offenders.

<h1>The Department of State Services (DSS) has warned people against fake news and hate speeches designed to whip up ethnic, religious or political sentiments during the elections.</h1>

Mr Peter Afunanya, Public Relations Officer of the service, who disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja advised perpetrators to steer clear of acts capable of undermining national security.

“The service will, however, not stand idly and watch miscreants and mischief makers bring avoidable chaos and disorder upon the nation,“ he said.

He enjoined all stakeholders to be law abiding and observe the rules of engagement to ensure a successful exercise.

Afunanya reiterated the service`s commitment to the provision of adequate security throughout the period of the elections.

The spokesman urged politicians and the youths to shun all acts of violence capable of undermining the success of the exercise.

“The DSS will professionally discharge its statutory mandate which, among others, is to detect and prevent threats and crimes against the internal security of Nigeria,“ he said.

He said that the service was determined to identify and arrest criminals and their collaborators whose activities were inimical to the elections.

He implored the public to support security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct violence-free elections.

Afunanya urged citizens to responsibly exercise their civic duties without fear as security measures have been put in place for the safety of lives and property.

Adamu gave the assurance when the British High Commissioner, the EU representative in Nigeria, Heads of Mission of US, France and Germany paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday in Abuja.

I have said it before, we will remain professional in our conduct before, during and after the elections.

We will provide a level playing field for all the candidates in the process. We have made adequate provisions to provide security at polling booths and collation centres.

We will seek advice from you so that we can improve in our operations, he said.

Adamu said that the EU and the US had contributed much to the development of policing in Nigeria by providing high quality training and support.

In her remarks, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing said that her county was supporting the police in a wide range of areas.

Laing said other areas included public accountability, service delivery and coordination ahead of the general elections.

She said that Britain was also supporting the police in the training of Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) across the six geopolitical zones.

The envoy said that the country was also supporting in the coordination of security with the Independent National Electoral Commission.

On his part, the U.S. Deputy Head of Mission, David Young said that the US have projects such as the Transition Police Units (TPU) in the country.

He said that other supporting initiatives included provision of jackets and helmets for policemen deployed to the North East of Nigeria and advisers working with the police.
