<h1>The Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) has asked the Federal Government to carry out forensic investigation of the immediate and remote cause&nbsp;of the Abule Ado explosion of Sunday March 15, 2020, which killed scores and led to devastation of epic proportions.</h1>

The group in a statement issued in Lagos, also called on the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-olu, to immediately set up a special taskforce on pipelines security with the purpose of preventing ceaseless pipeline accidents in the state.

The Sunday morning blast occurred near the popular ASPAMDA market and Mechanic village in Abule Ado, Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area.

Vibrations from the blast shook many parts of the state and was felt as far as Iba, Okokomaiko, Agege, Alimosho and Surulere, among others.

The Lagos government had earlier&nbsp;stated the incident was not in any way linked to pipeline vandalism but could not provide details on the cause of the incident but the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) insisted it was caused by a truck that hit some cylinders stacked in a gas processing plant located near the corporations’ system 2B pipeline right of way.&nbsp;

Among the casualties of the explosion were a Reverend Sister, Henrietta Alokha, who is also the principal of Bethlehem High School, Abule Ado&nbsp;and some students of the school she was trying to rescue.&nbsp;

A family of four that were on their way to church also died, as well as a newly-wed couple who were said to be expecting a child. Many are still unaccounted for and suspected to be under rubble&nbsp;in collapsed houses at the time of preparing this statement.

ERA/FoEN, however, cautioned the Federal Government "not to be too casual" to conclude that that the incident was an accident, noting that the accounts of the NNPC on&nbsp;the real cause of the blast is unconvincing and raises some questions.

ERA/FoEN Deputy Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi said: “There is something suspiciously different about this explosion. The scale of destruction is nothing like any of&nbsp;&nbsp;the pipeline explosions we have monitored and documented for several decades.

“The Sunday incident’s scale of destruction could only be likened to military grade explosions or aerial bombardment. We can’t treat this casually as an accident caused by a truck.

“With the current security challenges facing this country, it is extremely premature to draw conclusions without conducting forensic investigation on this particular blast. Not even the accidental detonation of bombs at the Ikeja cantonment caused this scale of destruction and ruins. Government must conduct comprehensive investigation to establish if this was a crime or an accident.

“And there are questions begging for answers: Who drove the truck? What is the truck doing on a pipeline on Sunday morning? Was the gas plant opened on a Sunday? Was the content of the truck weaponised?

“And for the NNPC that has admitted some level of culpability by confirming that the primary explosion came from its gas truck, it should immediately initiate the process of providing remediation for the affected families and businesses while its officials found to have through negligence orchestrated this massive destruction should be made to face the law.”

ERA/FoEN commiserated with the families of the dead and those that lost properties and businesses.

The group, however, urged Governor Sanwo-olu to immediately set up a task force on pipeline security.

&nbsp;“It is unfortunate that the Federal agencies saddled&nbsp;with the protection and security of pipelines has failed woefully. The governor as the Chief Security officer of the state needs to act in a way that will put an end to these perennial deaths and destruction, since Lagos sits on a web of oil and gas pipelines,” the group stated.

Meanwhile, Governor Sanwo-Olu was in Abuja to brief President Muhammadu Buhari on the incident.

This was on the sidelines of a meeting of governors of the ruling All Progressives Congress and the president.

<h1>The South-South chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown its weight behind the leadership of its national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.</h1>

This formed part of resolutions at a well-attended meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) members of the zone in Abuja on Sunday, March 15, 2020.

In a communiqué signed by the deputy Senate president, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, and eight others, the members disassociated themselves from the emergency NEC meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 17, 2020.

The emergency NEC meeting was convened by Victor Giadom.

The meeting comes amid rumours of a plot to remove Oshiomhole as the party's national chairman.

According to the South-South members, Gaidom had resigned his position as a member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party and lacks the power to convene a NEC meeting.

"We agree that the National Chairman of our great party, the All&nbsp;Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams&nbsp;Oshiomhole has done very well in the administration&nbsp;of the affairs of our great party," the communiqué read.

"That under the leadership of Comrade Adams&nbsp;Oshiomhole, we won the just concluded presidential&nbsp;elections, won majority of the seats in the National&nbsp;Assembly, and also won governorship elections in&nbsp;most states of the federation.

"That in line with the resolutions reached by the&nbsp;National Working Committee (NWC) of our party, we&nbsp;dissociate ourselves from the purported NEC meeting&nbsp;being summoned by Hon. Victor Giadom as he does not have the constitutional powers to summon NEC&nbsp;meeting.&nbsp;

"That the said Hon. Victor Giadom is not a member of&nbsp;NWC having resigned his position as deputy national&nbsp;secretary of the Party to contest elections in Rivers&nbsp;state as deputy governorship candidate in the 2019&nbsp;general elections.&nbsp;

"That we implore all members of NEC to respect the&nbsp;decisions of the National Working Committee (NWC)&nbsp;of our party that the purported NEC meeting&nbsp;summoned by Victor Giadom is illegal and&nbsp;unconstitutional.&nbsp;

<h1>The North East Peace Advocates has lauded Mustapha Maihaja for restoring transparency and accountability to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).&nbsp;</h1>

The group made this known in a report to appraise emergency management in Nigeria after a study of NEMA's activities in the North-East with regards to crisis management.

In the report signed by President, Bitrus Ali on Sunday, March 15, 2020, the group hailed the Director-General for his agency's interventions in mitigating the suffering of internally displaced persons in the North-East.

The group said it observed NEMA’s presence in remote villages, communities, and hamlets in the North-East.

This, according to the group, is made possible through Maihaja's reforms structured in line with best global practices in disaster and emergency management.&nbsp;

"The impact of NEMA in North-East Nigeria is indeed commendable given the manner its operations are structured in line with best global practices in disaster and emergency management," the report said.

The group also appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari's willpower and "extraordinary commitment" to addressing disasters and emergencies in Nigeria through the appointment of Maihaja.&nbsp;

It advised ministries, departments, and agencies in the country to emulate the accountability and transparency in NEMA's operations.&nbsp;

<h1>No fewer than 350 lawyers across the country have vowed to resist any attempt by the Senate to pass the proposed Armed Forces Commission Bill into law.&nbsp;</h1>

Sponsored by Senate Minority leader and lawmaker representing Abia-South, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the bill, among others, seeks to address the lopsided appointment of heads of security agencies by the president.&nbsp;

The Senate's Minority Leader and others connected with the said bill have come under criticism, the latest being legal practitioners under the aegis, Lawyers Initiative for Democratic Advocacy (LIDA).&nbsp;

In a letter signed by Director of Communication, Ekpa Stanley Ekpa and addressed to Senate President Ahmed Lawan, the group declared that as legal practitioners, it was their duty to ensure that the rule of law, justice and separation of powers are upheld for the betterment of the ordinary citizens.

The group believes that if passed, the bill will whittle down the president's powers and hand it over to the legislative arm while also establishing the Armed Forces Service Commission.

It revealed that the armed forces bill goes against their mission, describing it as “obnoxious and repulsive, targeted at reducing the Nigerian Armed Forces into a mushroom assemblage that can be easily subjected to political interference”.&nbsp;

The group argued that it is the duty of the Federal Character Commission to enforce the Federal Character Principle and not that of the Senate and if passed the bill would lead to several administrative crisis among the various bodies involved.

It added that the bill would "serve no useful purpose" towards the development of Nigeria.

The bill is sponsored by Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe.

<h1>An ex-serviceman, Major Atawodi Achile (retd), has alerted President Muhammadu Buhari over the implication of the proposed Armed Forces Bill by the Senate if passed into law.&nbsp;</h1>

The erstwhile military officer made this known in an open letter to President Buhari, where he described&nbsp;the bill as a plot to overthrow the democratically elected government of President Buhari.

Major Achile said it is “irrational, aberrational, inchoate, corrosive, abuse of legislative powers and traduces military tradition” for the National Assembly to embark in such path.

According to him, the National Assembly is being "instigated" by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and others interested in overthrowing the current administration and truncating the nation's democracy.&nbsp;

"The contents of the proposed legislation seeks to wrest the sacred powers and authority conferred on you by the 1999 Constitution Section 217 and 218 for the composition, appointment and termination of services of Service Chiefs of the Armed Forces of Nigeria by vesting it in a Commission," the retired military officer said.

"The Bill expressly states that the Commission shall have the powers to recommend to you or whoever is the President those qualified for appointment as Service Chiefs and Heads of other arm-bearing security agencies in Nigeria.&nbsp;

"We find such provisions irrational, abberrational, inchoate, corrosive, abuse of legislative powers and traduces military tradition. This is a serious attempt to unlawfully erode the powers of the Presidency and make the appointment of Service Chiefs and termination of same susceptible to manipulation by political musketeers.

"Mr. President sir, I want to put you on notice that the National Assembly is being instigated by Senator Abaribe and a few conspirators into unwholesome actions. It is another clandestine attempt to overthrow your government and truncate our democracy," he added.

The security expert, however, urged the president to take “decisive actions to checkmate the veiled infiltration of our National Assembly by foreign forces and agents in furtherance of the destabilisation plots against Nigeria”.&nbsp;

APC's deputy national publicity secretary, Yekini Nabena, made the disclosure to journalists in Abuja while reacting to the legality of of the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting convened by Giadom and his purported endorsement to replace Comrade Adams Oshiomhole as national chairman of the ruling party.

The APC deputy Spokesperson, who faulted Giadom's endorsement to replace Adams Oshiomhole, described as "strange and an aberration that Giadom still attends meetings of the NWC and could call for a NEC meeting".&nbsp;

The Nabena called on stakeholders not to lose sight of due process and the dictates of APC's constitution.

"I call on members of our party and the public to disregard the so called zonal caucus meeting which held on Thursday at the Edo State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja," he said.

"The meeting was neither convened nor attended by the APC national vice chairman (South South), Hilliard Eta, and leader of the party in the South-South, deputy Senate president, Ovie Omo-Agege. Hence, all decisions reached at the purported meeting is a nullity and definitely does not reflect the views and stand of the Party's South South caucus.

"Specifically, on the purported meeting's request that the APC NEC confirm, Victor Giadom, as acting national chairman, we cannot be taken for a ride because of the political and 2023 presidential aspirations of his (Giadom) sponsor and godfather who is attempting to control the Party's structure.

"It should be known that Victor Giadom tendered his resignation letter to the National Working Committee (NWC) to contest the 2019 election as the party's deputy governorship candidate in Rivers State.

"It is strange and an aberration that he still attends meetings of the NWC, occupies the office of Deputy National Secretary and convenes a NEC meeting. In our politicking, we must not lose sight of due process and the dictates of the Party's constitution," he added.

Gaidom had announced that he had taken over the running of the party following the court-ordered suspension of Oshiomhole as national chairman.

"Those saying Shisha is safer than cigarette are being economical with the truth," he said to an audience of young Nigerians, advertising practitioners and law enforcement agents.

"Shisha is tobacco; pure and simple. A session of Shisha is 100 sticks of cigarette. There's nothing safe about it. The flavours will not make you realise the health risk you're exposing yourself and others to.

"You have people say I don't smoke cigarette but I smoke Shisha. It's the same thing if not worse" he announced.

Oluwafemi, who doubles as the deputy executive director of the Environmental Rights Action/ Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN), noted that the saying: "smokers are liable to die young" does not help to discourage the use of tobacco products.

"The saying: 'Smokers are liable to die young' does not speak to the real issue. It makes smoking look not so dangerous. It makes death from tobacco products look like a probability when the real message should have been that 'smoking kills,'" he declared.

He called for the enforcement of the National Tobacco Control (NTC) Regulation 2019 which seeks to discourage the use of tobacco products in the country.

The suspension comes weeks after the Supreme Court declared the Peoples Democratic Party candidate winner of the Bayelsa governorship election over a certificate forgery case against the APC deputy governorship candidate at the poll.

A lover of books, Sanusi had over 40,000 of them, including journals, catalogued at the expansive library.

Abba noted that the books, worth N200 million, have been safely evacuated from the palace.

"His Highness’ greatest concern was the fate of his books, so my sister and I stayed behind to ensure that we evacuated all the books. It took us sleepless nights to accomplish the task in two days,” Abba told Daily Nigerian.

"I made most of the transactions for the purchase of the books, and I can tell you, in conservative estimate, they’re worth over N200m,” he announced.

Sanusi, who was deposed as emir of Kano over alleged insubordination, has since arrived Awe in Nasarawa state, where he'll stay on exile.

<h1>The Presidency has reacted to an allegation that President Muhammadu Buhari ordered the dethronement of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the Emir of Kano.</h1>

Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had accused President Buhari of having a hand in Sanusi's ordeal.

But in a statement on Wednesday, March 11, 2020, presidential spokesperson, Garba Shehu, described the allegation as untrue.

”The President does not have a history of intervening in the affairs of any state in the country, unless the issue at hand is of national consequence. On such matters which impinge on national security, he has a duty of involvement as the law stipulates,” he said.

”As outlined in the Constitution, the appointment or removal of emirs and other traditional leaders is strictly within the jurisdiction of state governments. It is unfair and disingenuous of opposition politicians to try to link the situation in Kano State to the federal government and the Nigerian President.

”Although a retired General and former Military Head of State, President Buhari clearly understands that under the current democratic dispensation, the government at the centre cannot read instructions or twist the arms of all or any of the 36 state governments making up the federation. They all have their powers specified under the Constitution.

”President Buhari commends the people of Kano for keeping calm in the past few days of the dethronement announcement. He prays that the will of Allah will be done at all times, and that the emirate/state and its people continue to experience progress irrespective of who is on the throne.”

Sanusi was deposed by the Kano State Government over allegations of insubordination on Monday, March 9, 2020.

The dethroned emir has since arrived Awe in Nasarawa state, where he would stay during exile.

<h1>No fewer than 200 civil society organisations have unanimously rejected the proposed Armed Forces Commission bill.</h1>

Senate Minority Leader, Eyinnaya Abaribe, had proposed a bill to, among other things, prevent the lopsided appointment of heads of security agencies by the president.

At a town hall meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, some civil society organisations described the proposed bill as a plot to usurp the powers of the president, who doubles as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to appoint and sack security chiefs.

Ogenyi Okpokwu, who led the groups on the platform of Parliament Watch, said the proposed legislation is an "invitation to anarchy".

In a communique signed by Danelsi Momoh, Kabir Dallah and two others, the CSOs urged the National Assembly to focus on passing bills that would promote the interest of the nations.

"One bill that attracted the attention of the members in attendance is the Armed Forces Service Commission (Est.) Bill 2020 (SB 362)," the communiqué said.

"According to the bill, the appointment of Chief of Defence Staff, Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Air Staff, Chief of Naval Staff, Director of Military Intelligence and heads of other arm-bearing security agencies shall be appointed subject to recommendations by the Senate.&nbsp;

"The bill is advocating that the Armed Forces Service Commission shall have the power to approve the promotion of officers as heads of military formations/branches such as General Officers Commanding Divisions of the Nigerian Army and their equivalents in the Navy and Air Force, amongst a host of others.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Members of the Parliamentary Watch unanimously agreed that the proposed Armed Forces Service Commission bill is retrogressive and an attempt to undermine the powers of the President as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as stipulated in Chapter Six, Section 2 (1) (2).

"That bill is an affront to the office of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria."

The CSOs said the Armed Forces Services Commission bill "lacks merit in conceptualisation" and should be rejected by lawmakers.

Abaribe had proposed a bill to, among other things, prevent the lopsided appointment of heads of security agencies by the president.

<h1>The Centre for Africa Liberation and Socio-Economic Liberation has lauded the Federal Government's decision to investigate and prosecute Boko Haram sponsors in the North-East.</h1>

According to the group, the battle against terrorism in the North-East would have long ended but for the alleged support the terrorists receive from some politicians.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, convener of the group, Princess Ajibola, hailed the Nigerian military for its tremendous feat in the war against terrorism "despite conspiracy by desperate politicians and their cohorts in foreign countries".&nbsp;

According to Ajibola, the supporters have continually engaged in acts that undermine the efforts of the&nbsp;military, like supplying food, drugs, to arming Boko Haram terrorists.&nbsp;

The group urged the Federal Government to investigate and prosecute those Nigerians who have formed a "deadly alliance" with international non-governmental organisations as, according to them, it would mark the final victory over the terrorist group.

"President Muhammadu Buhari must, as a matter of national interest, ensure that anyone found guilty gets maximum punishment as it would serve as a deterrent to others and an avenue for them to repent from their evil ways," the group said.

The centre equally urged relevant security agencies to begin the process of profiling and identifying these individuals and organisations that have elected to enemies of the country.

<h1>As reactions continue to trail the removal and banishment of former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, a Professor of Islamic Political Thoughts at Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, Professor Umar Muhammad Labdo, has blamed the deposed traditional ruler for his woes.</h1>

Reacting to the development, Labdo told DailyTrust that Sanusi "invited calamity upon himself" by being partisan.

He also accused the deposed Emir of speaking against the custom of the emirate.

"It is unfortunate that the emirate is being played with by politicians, but Sanusi invited this to himself," the professor said.

"He is too vocal against the custom. Traditional rulers have ways of contributing to governance not publicly.

“He is pro-women against men. He told women to retaliate if their husbands slapped them. This is against our culture in Africa. He is too blunt; he talks without considering the feelings of his people,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has appointed Aminu Ado Bayero as Sanusi's replacement.

In line with tradition, Sanusi has been banished from Kano State after his dethronement.

Sanusi has since arrived his new home in Loko town of Nasarawa local government area in Nasarawa State.

'Sanusi told women to retaliate if slapped by their husbands,' Islamic Professor alleges

<h1>Former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has reacted to his dethronement by the State Government on Monday, March 9, 2020.</h1>

In a four-minute video, Sanusi described his sack, about six years after his appointment as Emir, as an act of God.

“With almost six years on this throne and (in charge of) our heritage. Today, the almighty Allah, who gave me the leadership has destined to take it back,” Sanusi said in Hausa.

“As I always say, leadership has predetermined tenure, the days Allah destined are numbered. When the days come to an end one must leave.

“We have accepted whatever Allah decides. We have agreed. We appreciate (God). We are happy and we know it is what is best for us.”

Soon after he was deposed, the Kano State Government announced Aminu Ado Bayero as his replacement.

In the video, Sanusi urged titleholders and palace officials to support the new emir.

“We enjoin everyone to remain peaceful. We have directed our family, our children and those that support us that whoever gets it and is endorsed by the people, they should pay allegiance to him.

“They should follow him (the new emir). They should guard his honour and dignity because that is also the honour and dignity of this palace.”

Sanusi expressed happiness for practicing his reign in accordance with that of his grandfather, Emir Sanusi I, who was deposed in a similar way in 1963.

“It is a thing of pride that made us to rule and end in the same fashion as Halifa,” he said.

Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, appreciated the people of Kano, titleholders, lieutenants and friends for their support and affection during his reign as Emir.

<h1>Former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, will be staying in Loko town of Nasarawa Local Government Area in Nasarawa state while on exile.</h1>

According to DailyTrust, Sanusi was scheduled to be exiled from Kano to Opanda town in Toto Local Government but for a change of decision at the last minute.

It was learnt that notable Nigerians like the Emir of Lafia, Justice Sidi Bage (rtd) personally met Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State and requested for a change of location.

According to the source, others who called the governor were Alhaji Aliko Dangote and General Aliyu Gusau amongst others.

It was learnt that Governor Sule agreed that the deposed emir be exiled in Loko which looks better than the initial place that the former emir was to be taken to.

Sanusi was deposed as Emir of Kano by the State House of Assembly on Monday, March 9, 2020.

The former Central Bank Governor had fallen out with Governor Umar Ganduje of Kano State during the buildup to the 2019 governorship election.

It was learnt that Dangote and the Emir of Lafia had pleaded with the governor to allow Sanusi stay in a better place during his exile from Kano.

<h1>Hours after he was dethroned as the Emir of Kano, the Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, has announced Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as one of those to be conferred with honorary doctorate degrees.</h1>

According to the University, Sanusi alongside the chairperson of Innoson Motors, Innocent Chukwuma, and other notable Nigerians would be honoured at its convocation ceremony scheduled to hold between March 9 and March 13, 2020.
