<h1>Sen. Oluremi Tinubu (APC) Lagos Central, said on Thursday that more women should be considered for leadership positions in the 9th assembly.</h1>

Tinubu made the remark in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the presentation of Certificates of Return to elected National Assembly members in Abuja.

Tinubu, who is the longest serving female lawmaker in the senate, said that she had garnered enough experience and should therefore be considered for a leadership position in the Assembly.

“The men have to trust the women to do that, especially the All Progressives Congress (APC) led administration in making sure that women are given their fair share.

“I am the first woman in Nigeria to be re-elected for third term as a Senator, I think they have to consider what they will give to a woman at the 9th assembly.

“I believe I have represented the women agenda for over 20 years and they should trust me and my office will be opened to them; then we can move the agenda of the nation forward and I am looking forward to that,” she said.

Tinubu promised to be a voice for the voiceless and a defender of the cause of the less privileged through Legislative Advocacy, declaring that her life had been about service, most especially for women.

“Women should come together and support each other. A woman who is in a position should be there for other women, where ever God has placed you, the next woman in the street is your sister, daughter and your mother, so you should keep speaking out for them.

“When one is speaking, she is speaking for all, it will not just be all about designer bags, but, let’s make sure that when we are wearing one, we are giving one to that other women,“ she said.

The lawmaker, who is going for a third term in the Senate, assured of her commitment to ensuring that Constituency Projects and Intervention Programmes nominated across the senatorial district would be duly executed and delivered according to specifications and within the specified period.

“I will also continue to nominate and facilitate meaningful programmes and projects for my constituency,“ she expressed.

He said the elections were supposed to offer opportunity for Nigerians to choose those who would serve them and not a  battlefield for warriors fighting to capture power, conquer territory and people.

Onaiyekan made the remark in a homily at mass of the 1st Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria and the Dedication of St Gabriel Chapel Building at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Durumi, Abuja, on Monday.

”Elections are supposed to be an opportunity for us to choose those who will serve us. In many cases, it has been turned into battlefield for warriors fighting to capture power and conquer territory and people.

”No wonder it has become such a do or die and winner takes it all.

“No wonder the process has been militarised, with armed thugs engaging our security forces, who in their turn are rarely able to be as fair and professional as they claim to be. No wonder votes often no longer count.

”When this happens, it is not only the losing contestant who alleges fraud. More significantly, it is the people, the voter, who is denied the once in four years opportunity to choose who will serve us as political leaders.

”If the name of the political game does not change from domination to service, elections will continue to be problematic and the nation will continue to stagnate,” Onaiyekan said.

The cleric, however charged those who won in the elections to always discharge their duties, having in mind that power belongs to God alone and He would demand for accountability on how power is used.

”Whatever the outcome of our elections, fair or foul, whoever holds power at the end of the day, even with the fairest of election victory, must remember that power belongs to God and Him alone.

”He will demand strict accountability on how anyone takes power, and how anyone uses power. God cannot be deceived or challenged,” he said.

Onaiyekan said the voter apathy during the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections was as a protest and a vote of no confidence on the electoral process by the electorate.

He said, ”it would seem that many of the challenges that emerged during the process were as a result of bad laws, which made implementation problematic, and at times offered lacunae for evil minded people to exploit things to their own advantage.

”Even where the rules are clear, they were not always adhered to. Those who claim that these elections were wonderful because it worked in their favour should be reminded that bad election cannot lead to good governance.

”The massive boycott of the polls on March 9 in many places can well be a loud protest and vote of no confidence in the process that had destroyed their trust in the system.

”The government that has been declared re-elected must listen to the sound of murmurs and protest in the winds and take proactive steps to pull the nation together, even while we are waiting for the outcome of the legal challenge already on course in the tribunals.

”It is quite unfortunate that in modern era, free, fair, transparent and peaceful election has become so hard to attain.

”To the extent that the problems are deliberate manipulations, it is time to repent and change ways, for the sake of the survival of our nation, now and for future generations to come.”

<h1>The Independent National Electoral Commission is set to announce President Muhammadu Buhari president-elect, following the collation of results of the 23 February election.</h1>

INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu will make the announcement at 3am on Wednesday.

At the end of collation on Tuesday night, President Buhari crossed the 15 million mark in votes scored in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

He polled 15,191,847 votes, winning in 19 of the states, after the result of Rivers was added.

His main challenger Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party scored 11, 255,978 votes and won 17 states and Abuja.

Buhari also satisfied the constitutional requirement of making 25 per cent in 34 states and the FCT. He missed the cut in Enugu and Anambra states.

In 2015, Buhari scored 15, 424,921 votes to beat the PDP incumbent Goodluck Jonathan who scored 12,853,162 votes.

It means Abubakar performed worse than Jonathan.

INEC set to announce Buhari as President-elect

Ibhadode, also Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, Delta, made the disclosure while giving a break down of election results for 17 Local Government Areas (LGA) of the state at the INEC National Collation Centre in Abuja.

The Cross Rivers Collation Officer said that 1,512,915 voters were registered; 461,033 were accredited; 446,046 votes were cast and a total of 421,901 valid votes were recorded while 24,145 votes were rejected  in the 17 LGA of the state.

He, however, said that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 326, the All Progressives Congress (APC) scored 117,302 and the Peoples Democratic Party scored a 295,737 in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) Cross Rivers State Collation Officer, Prof. Akii Ibhadode on Tuesday said 132,189 votes were canceled due to failure of card readers, violence and electoral malpractice in the Presidential election in the state
