Secondary school teacher allegedly flogs student to death

A teacher at the Government Day Secondary School Sankalawa in Zamfara State has allegedly flogged a student to death.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the incident was made known by the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar-Gummi on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.

The Deputy Speaker, who did not mention the name of the teacher said the House has received several reports on the issue adding that a female student of Government Female Day Secondary School, Kwatarkwashi got injured after the Vice Principal of the school subjected her to heavy punishment.

He said, “These problems apart from discouraging our children from acquiring education, also revealed poor attitude to work on the part of teachers in this state.”

Nassarawa State Government bans corporal punishment  in public schools

You will recall that in January, the Nasarawa state government suspended the principal and three teachers of the Government Science Secondary School (GSS), Nassarawa-Eggon for meting out corporal punishment to students.

A video showing a male teacher beating students on the assembly ground went viral and sparked outrage on social media.

Following the social media outrage and the suspension of the teachers, the state Commissioner of Education, Mr Tijani Ahmed announced that the state government has also banned corporal punishments in public schools across the 13 local government areas and 18 development areas of the state.
