The assassination of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Florida in 2012 by George Zimmerman is not going to be laid low. Now theaters in big cities like Chicago, New York, Los Angeles and Washington DC are staging a night of short plays about the famous killing of an innocent black boy.
Reports have confirmed that the popular Goodman Theatre in Chicago is the latest company to join in the national effort to secure Martin’s memory.
According to latest reports, "the Goodman will present six 10-minute works by Marcus Gardley,Tala Manassah, Mona Mansour, Winter Miller, Dominique Morisseau, Dan O’Brien,Quetzel Flores and A. Rey Pamatmat as part of a March 3 production of "Facing Our Truth: Short Plays on Trayvon Martin, Race and Privilege."
Other renown theater companies that have allegedly signed on to present the works this season include the Center Theatre Group of Los Angeles, The Public Theater in New York City, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and the Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company of Washington D.C.
Martin's inhumane death two years ago had sparked a nationwide debate about race and self-defense in America and the world in general. His accused killer, Zimmerman claimed he shot the teen to protect himself meanwhile Martin was unarmed.
We earlier reported that Zimmerman has been trying to organize a Charity Boxing Match with the likes of Kanye West, DMX and The Game; in order to raise funds for the Trayvon Martin Foundation, the teen's family had allegedly refused his offer.
Well, The New Black Fest commissioned the short plays and sees it as a dedication to supporting African-American playwrights. The Goodman in Chicago plans to also present six student works written in response to Martin’s death.
