American actor and comedian Anthony Anderson opens the ceremony. Did he just speak Zulu?
The event begins with a moving bit of Durban culture. DJ Fisherman and Naakmusiq are the first performers at the MAMAs, they perform their hit single 'Call out'.
The crowd goes wild! All eyes on Burna Boy! The 'Like to party' crooner starts off 'All eyes on me' from the bleachers and moves to takes the stage with AKA and Da Les!
Stonebwoy takes the stage to join the performance. Oh snap! His microphone volume is super low.
Anderson takes a swipe at Rick Ross. He says 10 years of MTV in Africa is like a prison sentence for the rap star.
Vanessa Mdee and Lynxxx present the first award of the night. The award for Best Live Performance goes to Diamond Platnumz. The Tanzanian star who beat Nigeria's Flavour Nabania, Big Nuz, Mi Casa, Toofan gives them props for their live performances.
2Face Idibia is joined by South African singer Bucie to perform his loved song 'African queen'. Who knew Bucie could speak Yoruba?
Bucie performs 'Easy to love'.
Who will take home the award for Best Group?
Paul sings: "E no easy ay!"
Best Pop artsit goes to Jeremy Loops.
Anderson returns on stage and fails badly at speaking French. Emmanuel Ikusebe who plays Femi on Shuga and MTV VJ Nomuzi take to the stage to present the awards for the next categories.
The award for BestLusophone act goes to Ary. As the singer thanks her fans, we can't help but notice her dress is almost see-through. Mama mia!
The winner of the Best Francophone award is about to be announced. All bets are on Toofan and DJ Arafat right now.
And the winner is DJ Arafat. Sadly he's not here to receive his trophy.
Ne-Yo is here!! The stage lightening looks super dope. He performs 'Let me love you'. Is it us, but why isn't Neyo dancing?
Ne-Yo brings Seyi Shay to perform with him on his 'Coming with you' track. Ooops! They just bumped into each other and Shay almost fell. Her dress though!
Let the turn up begin! The 'So sick' singer performs 'She knows'.
Saran Kaba Jones and S’Bu Mavundla are announced as the winners of the MTV Leadership awards.
Yemi Alade and Sauti Sol are the next performers.

Trevor Noah beats Nigeria's Basketmouth and OC Ukeje in the Personality of the year category.
Diamond Platnumz steps up to show us why he holds the crown for best performer in Africa. Flavour Nabania gives his set an Eastern twist. And the ladies are going wild; two hot men whining their waists on stage.
Everybody 'Gweta'. Toofan take the stage with almost 20 dancers.
DJ Jimmy Jatt sure looks dapper in his blue suit. He and Jessica Nkosi present the MAMA Evolution award.
D'Banj is announced as the winner of the MAMA evolution award. The Koko master dedicates his award to Don Jazzy. (By the way, anyone else notice D'Banj and Bonang kiss?!!)
Ladies and gentlemen, Jhene Aiko is on the stage.
HHP and Kenya's top fashion blogger Sharon announce Cassper Nyovest as the winner of the best hip-hop award. The South African rapper shares how he used to open up for HHP and now he is receiving his award from the SA rapper.
Yemi is in shock as she is announce as the Best Female in Africa. The singer brings out her fellow nominees to share the stage with her.
"Omo you don make me fall in love", sings D'Banj. Such fun with the Koko master as he grabs a selfie stick and films himself performing.
We hear drums . . . Davido and Uhuru are here. Davido's energy is something else.
OBO grabs a couple of drum sticks and joins the drummers.
Darey asks the most beautiful woman in South Africa to be in his new video. She agrees on the condition that she doesn't have to twerk.
And the winner for Best Video is Ricky Rick. His video 'Nafukwa' is credited as the best video of the year.
Davido wins Best Male act of the year for the second time in a row.
KO gets mystic on his set. Very symbolic performance from the SA rapper.
"Wha ya say?" Patoranking performs 'Daniella whine'. He starts in the middle of the audience then heads to the stage.
'All eyes on me' wins Best Collaboration of the year. AKA, Burna and Da Les dance to receive the trophy for their award-winning song.
Black Motion and Casper perform next. Anderson poses the question we've all been asking: "Cassper you gon' marry that girl or what?" (He's referring to the rapper's girlfriend Boity Thulo).
Nyovest's leg dance moves are killer.
OC Ukeje and DRC native Laurette take the stage to present the award for best song of the year. Hold on, OC speaks French?
And 'Dorobucci' wins Best Song of the year! Don Jazzy and Reekado Banks receive the award. The Supreme Mavin Dynasty CEO thanks his SMD team, his fans and Durban.
Don Jazzy and Pearl announce the winner of the honorary artist of the decade award.
Nigerian talent stays repping the country; and the winner is P-Square. They dedicate the award to upcoming artists.
The award winning duo prep the crowd for an electrifying performance. Joined by four dancers they perform 'Personally'.
