Vanuatu president, Baldwin Lonsdale has appealed to the world for help following the wave of destruction cyclone Pam left in its wake, in the country this weekend.

President appeals for help after storm destroys major parts of country
Vanuatu, which has been described as one of the world's poorest countries was ravaged by cyclone Pam last weekend leaving no fewer than 8 people dead and a significant amount of destruction in its path.

BBC reports that President Lonsdale revealed that the storm had "wiped out" all development of recent years and his country would have to rebuild "everything".
He said further:
"After all the development we have done for the last couple of years and this big cyclone came and just destroyed all the infrastructure the government has built. Completely destroyed."

Describing the storm "a monster", Lonsdale said he had not been able to confirm that his own family was safe.
While aid has began to arrive the country, contact has still not been made with some of its more remote islands even as aid agencies have described the category 5 storm as one of the worst disasters ever to hit the pacific region.
Reports state that in the capital Port Vila, just about every house there has received some damage while a village chief is reported to have said that there is a desperate need for fresh water supplies.
Meanwhile, military planes carrying supplies have started arriving from Australia and New Zealand, and other countries have pledged to help.
Commercial flights are due to resume today, Monday.
